Thomas William Tom Northcott 2018

Obituary Overview
Thomas William « Tom » Northcott
Northcott, Captain Thomas William “Tom” – age 94, of Lower Sackville. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our loving husband and father. Captain Thomas Northcott, born June 25, 1923, in Norris Point, Newfoundland, was the son of the late Theopholius and Annie (Knott) Northcott. Tom had a fine sense of humour which warmed all those who were blessed to know him and work with him. His interesting work history took him to locations around the world. Tom’s love of boats and respect for the power of the seas served him well as he capably served on convoys across the North Atlantic and was a distinguished veteran of the Merchant Marine. Following World War II, Tom became a resident of Halifax and progressed to the rank of Captain with the Royal Canadian Naval Auxiliary on ships in HMC Dockyard Halifax. Always curious and capable, Tom then became a Harbour Pilot with the Atlantic Pilotage Authority, based out of Port Hawkesbury. He guided super tankers and ships of many types through the waters of the Strait of Canso, Sydney Harbour, and the Bras d’Or Lakes. After retiring in 1987 to Lower Sackville, Tom continued to enjoy and excel in many adventures with family and friends; including golf where he had 8 holes-in-one. He was an avid carpenter and loved hunting and fishing in Newfoundland. Tom spent many summers camping around Nova Scotia with family and friends and loved the fiddling music of Cape Breton and Newfoundland. Tom and Donna spent many winters in Florida golfing and socializing with their family and friends from Canada and the USA. Tom is survived by Donna (Payne), his loving wife of 40 years, and was predeceased by Mary Florence ( McIsaac), his devoted first wife of 25 years. Tom had a deep and constant love of family and will live on in the hearts of his children, Robert, Donna O’Sullivan (Ken Coolen), Darrell (Clara), Dean (Linda), of Toronto; grandchildren Marija and Christina; great-grandchildren, Emery, Isaiah, Olivia, and Niya and many nieces and nephews. Tom will be dearly missed by his sister Gladys Miller, of Corner Brook and sister-in-law Muriel Northcott of PEI. Tom’s generous love of family grew and fully embraced the children of Donna; Gary Penney (Shirley), Doug Penney (Louise), of Corner Brook, Brent Penney (Donna), of Dartmouth, Colleen Penney (Joe Currie), of Lower Sackville; grandchildren, Amanda, Deidre, Mark, Jim, Tavnor and Andrew; and great-grandchildren, Caitlin and Declan. Tom is also predeceased by his infant son, Joseph, cherished granddaughter, Natasha O’Sullivan, brothers’ Obediah and Donald, sisters Emma Simpson and Effie Verge, and Donna’s beloved daughter Maureen (Penney) Rowe. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, April 7th, with reception to follow, both in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth. Interment in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tom’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia or the Canadian Cancer Society. Many thanks to the staff of Cedar Crest unit of Camp Hill Veterans Hospital for their care and comfort of our beloved Tom. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com (Dartmouth Chapel).
