Thomas Stephen Warbin
April 06, 1935 – December 10, 2018
It is with great sadness, the family of Tom Warbin announces his passing on
Monday, December 10th at Dryden Regional Health Centre, at the age of 83 after a brave battle with cancer.
Tom was born in Port Arthur Ontario, enjoying life in a rural setting with his older sisters. Due to hardships, early in his life, Tom was especially sensitive to those to whom life had not been kind, helping those in need whenever he could. He had a zest for life and in his early teens, he enjoyed building things. One of his early projects involved constructing a boat, made from an old door and some scrap lumber and it actually floated! After that, he was hooked and went on to design many other innovative projects through the years.
Following High School, he began his career at Ross Engineering in Port Arthur as a draftsman. After several years there, he attended O.C.E. in Toronto, to obtain his teaching certificate with qualifications in mechanical drafting. His first teaching position was in Geraldton. He taught at the high school from 1962 to 1966. Moving to Dryden in 1966, he built his first house in 1967 on Colonization Avenue. It was known locally as the « house with the butterfly roof. » He taught drafting at Dryden High School from 1966 to 1977. In 1977, he purchased the former Diem and Eger business, embarking on a new career in glass and woodworking. With Lois at his side, he enjoyed 24 busy years, selling the business in 2001.
After retirement, Tom took up golf which gave him countless hours of enjoyment with friends. Being proud of his Ukrainian/Polish heritage, he was a proud member of the Ukrainian Literary Society. In his spare time, he was involved in many creative projects, including a three wheeled car constructed with used and new parts. This gave him many hours of pleasure.
Tom is survived by his wife Lois of 60 years, daughters Karen ( Spuro), Diana (Ted), and Jennifer (Brian), five grandchildren, Graham, Calvin, Violet, Tanya and Alex, sister Genevieve Johns, one sister-in-law Marion and brother-in-law Walter, also one niece and many nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Stephen and Anne (ne Sobkowich) and one sister Florence Bold.
Tom’s family would like to invite all of his friends and acquaintances to join them at a Celebration of Life for an informal gathering at First United Church fellowship hall on Saturday January 5, 2019 at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to the Dryden Food Bank or the Second Chance Pet Network, through Stevens Funeral Homes, P.O. Box 412, Dryden, ON P8N 2Z. Condolences may be posted at www.stevensfuneralhomes.ca
