The Reverend Canon Caldwell « Cal » Allison Roe
McMillian – died peacefully with his family and priest by his side at
Valley Regional Hospital on August 4th, 2018. He was born in Belfast,
Northern Ireland in 1935 to the late William and Albertha (Roe)
McMillan. A priest of the Anglican Church of Canada, Cal was ordained
in 1966 and served in three dioceses. In addition, he held government
positions working with the concerns of Indigenous people, managing the
Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission and chairing an organization
of the Canadian Mental Health Association. Cal was a
Secretary/Treasurer of the Diocese of Caledonia in Prince Rupert and
also served as a parish priest in the Greater Sudbury area. He was a
Governor of Thornloe University and of the Pastoral Institute of
Northern Ontario. In both Caledonia and Algoma, he was made an
Honorary Canon. He contributed leadership to the wider church as a
member of both the Provincial Synod of B.C. and the Yukon, and the
General Synod of the Anglican Church of Canada. After retirement in
2000, he was a
priest-‐in-‐charge during two
periods of interim ministry, first at St. John’s Anglican
Church, Wolfville and then at St. James Anglican Church, Kentville.
Well known for his intelligence and great sense of humour,
Cal’s wit, warmth, and acceptance of others were a gift to
everyone who met him. His love of life showed itself in his passion
for curling, music, photography, sports, reading and gatherings with
good friends and family. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary
(Davis) and their children; Karin (Benoit) Lalonde of Chester, Brian
of Toronto, and Sara (Ulf) Stahmer of Toronto, and grandchildren
Justine and Jason Lalonde, Jasper, Quinn, and Zachary Stahmer, and by
his brother Dr. Barclay Francis Hanlon McMillan of Ottawa. He was
adored and treasured by his family and will be deeply missed. A
funeral service will be held for Cal at St. John’s Anglican
Church, Wolfville on Saturday August 18th at 3pm with Reverend Sandra
Fyfe officiating. Reception to follow. Donations in his memory may be
made to the Valley Hospice Foundation, St. John’s Anglican
Church or a charity of your choice.
