Obituary for
Terence Matheson C.d.
Captain Terence Thomas Matheson, CD (RCAF, Ret’d)
25 August 1931 – 25 July 2018
Passed peacefully in Belleville at age 86. Beloved husband and best friend of Dawn Matheson (Laverty) for over 63 years. Predeceased by his son Michael (Sharon) who frequently remarked about the wonderful quality of the love shared by our parents. Lovingly remembered by his son BGen Mark Matheson (Trudy). “Gamp” to his grandson, Scott (Michelle) and great-grandchildren Jack and Phoebe. Larger than life brother to Rev. Denis Matheson (Elizabeth). Missed by cousins, nieces, nephews and friends across Canada and throughout the world.
Born to the late Cleveland and Jean Matheson (Henderson) in Saint John, N.B., Dad’s life was shaped by his long service in the RCAF. Despite numerous postings both within Canada and overseas, (NATO Germany and NORAD, Tacoma WA) family life was always an “adventure”. With his infectious sense of humour, boundless energy and true love of nature, however, Dad always insisted we enjoy ourselves while travelling the “path less travelled”. Memories of camping on the Riviera, ice-fishing in Labrador, beach walks in B.C. or just relaxing at the cottage at Oak Lake all stem from his genuine love of family and fun.
A leader and role model to the end, Dad faced his sickness with quiet courage and characteristic good humour, only concerned with his family. Mission complete Dad – rest easy. Per Ardua Ad Astra.
In accordance with the wishes of the deceased there will be no visitation or funeral. Inurnment at a later date in New Brunswick. If desired, donations may be made to the Cancer Society, the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Belleville General Hospital Foundation. Arrangements Entrusted to JOHN R. BUSH FUNERAL HOME, 80 Highland Ave., Belleville (613-968-5588). To share memories of Terence and for online condolences, please visit www.rushnellfamilyservices.com
