Tass grew up in Outremount, Quebec where he attended Guy Drummond and Strathcona Academy. He entered McGill University in 1950 receiving his BA in 1954, his BCL in 1957 and was admitted to the Quebec Bar in 1958. He was awarded the title of Queen’s Counsel in 1974.
Tass spent 42 years as a corporate lawyer, and was twice the managing partner of his firm for 5 years in the 1970s and the 1990s. He was one of the lucky ones because he loved what he did, enjoyed working with his fellow partners, associates, staff and his clients.
His firm, Doheny, McKenzie Gervais, merged with McMaster Meighan in 1998 becoming McMaster Gervais which then merged in 2000 into a national firm, now known as Borden Ladner Gervais. He was director of numerous public and private companies. Tass retired in 2001 and then travelled the world with Diane.
He was actively involved in various civic and charitable organizations.
The Montreal Neurological Hospital (1994-2001) Chairman 1998-2001; McGill University Health Centre (1997-2002), Executive Committee 1997 to 2000; McCord Museum of Canadian History, Executive Committee 1987-1994; Boy’s Farm & Training School (1970-74) President 1971; Ville Marie Social Services (1974-1976), President 1975-76.
Tass was also active socially and athletically, particularly with Montreal Badminton and Squash Club (1954-1996), President 1981-1982; Hillside Tennis Club (1963 to Present), President 1972-1973; Twenty Debating Club (1974 to 2005); Montreal Film Society (1962-1966), President 1964.
He enjoyed tennis, squash, swimming, canoeing, mountain trekking, skiing, photography, art, reading, writing, films, good food, fine wine, the company of his children and their spouses, grandchildren, and his friends. Two hip and two knee replacements were the only things that slowed him down in his 70s.
A celebration of his life will take place at the Mount Royal Cemetery Funeral Complex on Friday, October 5th. Visitation at 11am, Service at 12pm and reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Montreal General Hospital Foundation
