Susan Elizabeth Noiles, 62 of Lower Sackville passed away unexpectedly on November 14, 2018 at home. Born in Glace Bay, she is the daughter of the late Edward Gravefell and Sarah Gravefell.
Besides her mother Sarah (Walter) Woodman Truro, Susan is survived by her husband Richard Noiles Halifax, children: Chris (Marie) Orleans Ontario, Stephen, Halifax & Amanda (Steve) Hubbards, granddaughter Faith Noiles, Orleans Ontario, sisters Roseann (Ken) MacKenzie Amherst and Alison (Randy) Lindsay Truro, sister-in-law Kaye (Dwight) Higgins, Truro, brother-in-law Brian (Camilla) Noiles, Halifax, as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides her father, she was predeceased by her brother-in-law Ron Noiles & sister-in-law Grace Noiles both of Ontario. She will also be missed by her beloved cat Tiger.
Susan grew up in Glace Bay, Port Hawkesbury and Truro. She graduated from Cobequid Educational Centre in Truro and went on to obtain a Diploma in Secretarical Studies, a Bachelor of Secretarial Services and a Bachelor of Education, all from Mount Saint Vincent University. She also completed a Masters of Education (Counselling) from Acadia University.
Susan began her teaching career at Musquodobit Rural High School. She took a hiatus after the birth of her first child and remained at home for several years raising her three children. Upon her return to teaching, she worked at the Adult High School in Halifax, JL Illsley High School, Halifax West High School (both in Halifax) & Lockview High School in Fall River, where she worked as a guidance councillor for the past 18 years. Susan loved her career and was a passionate educator and a strong believer in the importance of teachers playing a key role in the provision of optimal education.
Susan was a member of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union serving as both Local and School representative, a member of the Provincial Executive and an Insurance Trustee. For those who knew her, her outgoing nature and love of conversation was a key part of her personality. She loved attending social events with friends as well as spending time with her children, sisters and nieces. She was an avid reader and loved books from the time she was a child. Susan also loved to travel and often talked about the many adventures she experienced while away. She particularly loved visiting her « precious girl », her granddaughter Faith, and spent many long weekends in Orleans with her. Faith called Susan her « castle Nana » and the two shared a very special bond.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Susan’s life will be held on Thursday November 22 at 2:00 p.m., Knox United Church, 567 Sackville Drive, Lower Sackville. In keeping with Susan’s legacy of sharing stories and a heartfelt laugh, an opportunity will be provided for those wishing to share a favorite memory of Susan. A reception will follow the service, location pending. Family flowers only by request. Donations for a bursary in her name c/o Lockview High School, Fall River NS.
