In loving memory of Sue Ming Ford (Nellie), who passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday November 11, 2018 at 9:30 AM at the age of 84 years old at Saint-Brigid’s Home in Sillery, Quebec, Canada.
Nellie was born in Johannesburg, South Africa on January 28, 1934, the eldest daughter of the pre-deceased father Teong Fok and mother Wai Ching Ho. Known by family and friends as a hard-working, elegant, quiet, creative, gentle, intelligent, strong and brave woman with a smile like the sun. She emigrated from London UK to Vancouver BC in 1965, with then husband George Changfoot (a cardiologist, whom she divorced in 1975) and daughter Rosalind Changfoot.
Nellie’s creative passion was fashion design. As a young girl, she was always sewing and designing fashionable clothes, often with beautiful intricate beadwork. Friends remember her by the beautiful dresses she made and her quiet demure character. She was also an avid crocheter and knitter. I often remember my mother knitting a sweater I wanted, or making a dress for my prom or a party. Intricate tablecloths and clothes made by her agile fingers adorn our house.
We must not forget Nellie’s skill as a gourmet cook extraordinaire. She was an avid cookshow watcher and built an extensive cookbook library. All my friends and family remember my Mom as an amazing cook. Nellie’s creative passion even extended to Chinese painting and enamelling.
Nellie was a beautiful woman. In 1952 she won Christmas Queen in London, England. She was an avid movie watcher and she could name all the movie stars in B&W movies. She was always open to new things, be it, fashion, art, music, artifacts, food or books. She was always willing to offer a helping hand to those in need. Nellie adored animals and since a child always had many pets. She would even cook many special dishes for her pets on a daily basis. She has donated to the SPCA on a regular basis.
Nellie was a brave woman, as it was not easy coming to a new country (Canada), and having to bring up a child as a single parent, on a tight budget, and her family being so far away. She did her best to make a good life for her only child Rosalind. She did secretarial work in England, sales and secretarial in Vancouver. In Montreal she worked as a dental assistant. Nellie was a sage and a heroin in this life.
She is predeceased by her brother Tong Ford, sister Sue Hing Ford, brother Tim Ford and sister Jane Ford. Her surviving family, daughter Rosalind Changfoot and husband Andre Villemaire, as well as three grandchildren, Alexandra, Nicholas and Michaela Villemaire, her niece Charmaine, nephews Geoffrey and Jeremy as well as several cousins. Lastly, a big thanks to all the staff at the dialysis department of the Hotel Dieu in Quebec city who took care of her during her treatments. We also want to express our gratitude to the staff at Saint-Brigid’s Home who cared for her the past year.
