Steve Fobister, a resident of Grassy Narrows, Ontario, passed away on October 11, 2018 at Lake of the Woods District Hospital.
He was born February 22, 1952 in Dryden, Ontario and was 66 years old.
Steve is survived by his wife Katherine Land, children Steven Fobister Jr., Hans (Sherri), Darwin, Ashen, Asia, Emily Fobister, Clinton, Ethan (Laurie), Dorian, Howard, Deshaun, Isaac, Sherry Fobister, Catherine, Cashis, Cassie and great granddaughter Molola, his siblings Evelyn Pahpasay, Rosie Fobister, mother of his children and close friend Catherine Taypaywaykejick, nephews and nieces Roland, Terry, Pam, Eric, JB Fobister, Sylvia, Christine, Annette, Harvey, Darren, Marty, Jennifer, Lionel, Rebecca, Michelle, Diane, Jessica, Tyson, Jamie, Doreen, Keon, Jeffrey F., step children Chris Land, Arlene W., Samantha and Crystal, Dana and step daughter Alana Pahpasay, close and special friends Robert Williamson, John Hummel, Chester Draper, Earl Rattai and Ted Gibson.
He was predeceased by his mother, Margaret Isbister-Land, father Charlie Fobister, siblings Andrew (Uncle Sam), John, Roy, Robert, Margaret, Murray, Sharon and Patrick.
Steve was the Grand Chief of Treaty Three, Chief of Grassy Narrows (5 terms), probation officer, environmentalist, mediation negotiator, guide, hunter, trapper, good campfire bannock maker, Ball Lake Lodge Manager, sat on numerous boards and hockey coach of the “Famous Grassy Narrows Rockies”.
Some if his favourite activities and past times were hunting, fishing, vlts, yard work, riding lawnmower, visiting, story-telling, pow wow singing, fire keeper, helper for traditional ceremonies and bird watching.
His spirit name is Papiiwaaniimopetung and his clan was Sturgeon.
Wake Services will be held at Minnowsaywin Building at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 14, 2018.
A Traditional Funeral Services will be held at Minnowsaywin Building at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 with Elder Tommy White officiating with interment to follow at Grassy Narrows Cemetery.
