Obituary of Sister Hughes
The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada, London Neighbourhood, announce the death of our dear Sister Barbara Hughes, at the Residence of the Sisters of St. Joseph at 485 Windermere Road in London. Sister died on Sunday, December 9, 2018 accompanied on the last part of her journey by the Sisters along with Care Centre Staff, and her good friend, Janice Marchant. Laura Barbara Hughes, was born in Chatham, Ontario on August 6, 1924 and joined the Community of the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1959. She is remembered with affection by all her CSJ Sisters as well as her sister, Shirley Hawley, nephew Douglas, wife Teresa, their children Dustin, Amber and Jared Hawley, grandnephew and grandniece Jesse and Jessica Hawley. Predeceased by her parents, Thomas Hughes and Adeline (Broadbent), formerly of Chatham, and her sister Marjorie Hughes, brother-in-law Ross Hawley and nephew Michael Hawley, as well as her dear friend, Sister Ann Purtill. Sister Barbara had a large capacity for friendship. She was a no-nonsense kind of woman who was blessed with a lot of common sense and a very quick wit. She was generous in remembering birthdays with cards and gifts. Her love for dogs was well known. Barbara was someone who cared deeply for others and lived fully with vitality even as her strength was diminishing. We will miss her presence among us. All services will be held at the Sisters of St. Joseph Residence, 485 Windermere Road. Visitation will be on Thursday, December 13th from 2:30 – 4:00 and 7:00 -8:00 with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, December 14th at 10 am, with Father Richard Charrette presiding. Interment will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
