OBITUARY
Simon VERBOOM
August 5, 1931 – August 24, 2018
Simon Verboom was born in Rotterdam, Holland on August the 5th 1931 to Johan & Elizabeth (nee Rijke) Verboom, the youngest of 17 children. He, along with his wife Emma (neeVerkaik) and their three oldest children, Elizabeth (Betty), Jan (John) and Simon immigrated to Canada in the spring of 1958. Later in 1962 their youngest son Arthur (Tony) was born. The family grew up as part of the Christian Reformed church.
Simon had carried on the family tradition of his father, a baker as well and in 1965 opened his own business, the DUTCH BAKERY, in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Along with his family he operated the bakery for 22 years until his semi – retirement at which point he spent his summers working as a chef at a fly – in fishing lodge.
Later, he retired in Victoria, B.C. and remained there until the spring of 2017 at which point it became apparent that it was necessary to have him living closer to family due to health issues. He then moved to Coquitlam, B.C. to be near his son Simon’s family also of Coquitlam.
On August the 4th, one day before his 87th birthday Dad entered the hospital with pneumonia and other complications due to his lung and kidney cancer. His children arrived at that point to see him for the last time. After a week and a half in hospital he was transferred to Christine Morrison Hospice in Mission, B.C. where after one week he passed away peacefully with family at his side.
Simon is predeceased by his parents, all of his siblings and is survived by his former wife Emma Verkaik, his children Betty (Tapio), John, Simon (Erika) and Tony (Janet). He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild.
He will be interred at Hatzic Cemetery in Mission, B.C. after a private family ceremony.
The family would like to extend a special note of thanks for the outstanding care and compassion given to Dad while at Christine Morrison Hospice in Mission.
