Shirley Anne Ungard (nee Tournay), May 11, 1927 – February 7, 2018
Anne passed away peacefully at Muskoka Landing in Huntsville, Ontario on Wednesday, February 7, 2018. Anne was born in Hamilton, Ontario, May 11, 1927. She has lived all over Canada and the United States, spending her final few years in Huntsville, happy to be home in Canada.
Predeceased by her parents, Rev. Charles Robert and Pansy Louella May Tournay, her husband, Robert (Bob) Ungard, and her sister Joan Grace Huggins. She is survived by her sister, Audrey Irene Tournay. Mother to Patricia (Howard Brush) of Hekkla, Ontario, Dean (Fran Keevil) of Etwell, Ontario, Bryan (Beatrice) of Los Angeles, Calif., and Bethanne of Newbury, Ohio. Grandmother to Grant (Jennifer), Charles (Allison) and Colin (Coral) Brush, Robert (Sashaina) and Kathryn Ungard, and Wolfgang and Isadora Ungard; and Great Grandmother to Nick, Caden, Caledon, Julia, Hilary, Logan and Jared.
Anne was a scholar of languages and a lover of the natural world and its animals. A graduate of the University of Alberta, she did post-graduate work at Wheaton College in Illinois and completed her Master’s degree at John Carroll University in Ohio. A teacher and a mother, she devoted her time to her children, her church, and several missions throughout the world. A devoted naturalist, she was honoured for the more than 35 years she spent as an interpreter and volunteer with the Geauga Park District in Ohio.
A special thanks to the friends and staff at Muskoka Landing for the care and attention that Anne received in the last two years of her life. She will be interred in Rosseau, Ont. with her parents. A private family memorial will be held following interment. For those wishing to honour Anne with a memorial donation, please consider the Nature Conservancy of Canada, or SIM missions.
