It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma, Great-GreatGrandma, Sister, Aunt and Friend, Shirley Thiel, at the Dryden Regional Health Centre on March 1, 2018 at the age of 82.
Shirley was born in Saskatchewan to Anne and John Burko and she was the oldest of 4 girls: Lorraine Christiansen, Judy Sadek, Syliva Marsh.
At a young age, the family relocated and called Dryden home.
In 1954 she married Joe Thiel and they soon started their family. First they welcomed their daughter Joanne, followed by their son Chris.
Grandma had a few part-time jobs over the years but she made being a caregiver her full-time career. She raised her children, was very involved in raising her grandchildren and even looked after her great grandchildren.
Grandma’s happy place was her house on the river. It was a gathering place for all friends and family. Pontoon rides, paddle boat rides, swimming and fires in the backyard in the summer and Grey Cup parties and Boxing Day bashes in the winter.
One of Gramma’s favorite past times was fishing. She would fish with anyone who was willing to go and would usually out fish them.
Her creative talents were endless; stained glass, leather work, crocheting, knitting, sewing with and without a pattern and painting, just to name a few. She loved giving her creations to others as much as she enjoyed making them. Numerous Halloween costumes, lots of hats teddy bears, sweaters and blankets and colorful ponchos. If you were lucky, you have a painting to treasure.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband Joe, her daughter Joanne Smith, her sister Syliva Marsh and her Grandson-in-Law David Sutton.
She is survived by her Son Chris, her Granddaughters Kelly Sutton, Brandi Brisson, Jordan Thiel, Brett Thiel and Renee Robichaud, her Great-Grandchildren Allison Brechtefeld(Glen), Andrew Sutton, Makenzie Sutton, Danica Ewen, Brayden Clink, Skylyn Robichaud and Damon Robichaud and her Great-Great-Grandchildren, Kipton Brechtefeld and Hailey Williams.
Grandma has been cremated and we will celebrate her life in her backyard by the river like she would have wanted.
As per Shirley’s wishes a Private Family Service will take place at a later date.
If friends desire donations may be made to DRHC CT Scan Fund through Stevens Funeral Homes P.O. Box 412, Dryden ON P8N 2Z1. Condolences may be posted at www.stevensfuneralhomes.ca
