Shirley Margaret Sparks of Rosetown, SK passed away peacefully at Rose Villa on February 9, 2018 at the age of 94. Shirley was born in Kindersley, SK to John and Florie Sykes on January 28, 1924. She was the youngest of three children. Shirley attended school in Kindersley and Melfort before moving to Saskatoon. She worked briefly at a Safeway store and met Harold while ice skating at a local rink. They were married on November 1, 1947 and lived in Zealandia a short time before moving to the farm. Shirley had many interests which included gardening, knitting, curling and spending time with her family. She was the heart of the farm as many farm women are. There was always fresh baking, soups, and meals that would feed a large threshing crew. She would wait up with a pot of tea until the combine was in the yard and everyone was safe. Shirley was active in the Royal Purple and a member of the United Church in Zealandia. Shirley and Harold enjoyed travelling and went south for 29 years. Shirley was a caregiver most of her life looking after her mother, her mother-in-law, four boys and many grandchildren. She enjoyed her time on the farm but moved into Rosetown where she lived in Lions Manor before moving into the Nursing Wing and then Rose Villa. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
Shirley is survived by her four sons: Larry (Terry) and family Shannon (Christopher) Cordner and their children Meagan, Andrew and Nicolas, and Joel Sparks (Catherine); Terry (Glenna) and Cody Sparks; Kevin (Melanie) Sparks and daughters Jamie (Ryan) Lowe and their children Brooklyn and Weston, and Madison Sparks (Luke); Dwayne (Verna) Sparks and family Michael (Megan) and their children Branson and Kinley, Kendall Sparks, and Austin Sparks, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband Harold in 2008; her parents; her brothers Fred and Len, brothers-in-law Norman Sparks, Clifford and Albert Corfield and sisters-in-law Jean Sykes and Jean Sparks-Sweatman.
A service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rosetown and District Health Centre Foundation Inc., P.O. Box 653 Rosetown, SK S0L 2V0 or the Zealandia United Church, P.O. Box 1678, Rosetown, SK S0L 2V0. To send online condolences please visit shanidarfuneralservices.com.
