Shirley Fern Arbing Jollimore

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother at age 93 on August 13, 2018 in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII in Halifax. She was born on the Locke Road in Haliburton, P.E.I. on
December 14, 1924, the daughter of Harry Arbing and Harriet Alice Dignan, and grew up on the family farm moving to Woodstock, P.E.I. with her family when she was about four years old. She loved her life there and told many happy stories of that time. She briefly taught school in West Devon, P.E.I. before moving to Dartmouth, where she worked at the Dartmouth Naval Magazine. It was there she met her future husband, Earl Edgar « Jolly » Jollimore. They were married on August 11, 1951 and built a house on the Old Sackville Road in Lower Sackville, where they lived happily for 62 years. She moved to Windsor Elms Village in Falmouth in August of 2016. Mothering was Shirley’s job until Beverly was a teen. Then she took a course in bookkeeping and went back to paid employment. She worked briefly for a paint store and then finished her career in the library at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography. In the late 70s, Jolly and Shirley built a cottage on Sherbrooke Lake, Lunenburg Co. She worked hard alongside her husband to make the cottage comfortable and they spent many happy times there with family and friends. The annual family party was a highlight of the summer. She enjoyed swimming and got her bronze cross when she was in her 40s. Quilting was another of her hobbies and she did beautiful work. Family was very important to her and every summer she took her family « home » to the farm on Prince Edward Island. She visited her sister and their family in Dartmouth almost every week as well. She was a strong, independent woman and taught her daughters to be the same. Shirley is survived by her daughters, Carol MacKenzie Perry (David), Susan Jollimore, Brenda Berube (Yves), Beverly Jollimore; grandchildren, Lyndsey Schofield (Troy), Robyne Mackenzie, and great-grandson, Eric Schofield; step grandchildren, step great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Wanda Arbing, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Earl; her parents; her sister, Leone Rix and her husband, Everett Rix; her brother, Leith Arbing; her daughter, Janice in infancy; her son-in-law, Budd Dunphy; and several nephews. Cremation has taken place. A service in memory will be held Tuesday, August 28th, at 1 p.m. in Bedford United Church, 1200 Bedford Hwy., Bedford, with a reception to follow in the church hall. Family and close friends are welcome to attend. Interment will be at a later date. Family flowers only. Donations in memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
Our gratitude to the staff of Windsor Elms Village, especially House One, Osprey Landing. Mom could not have had a more loving and caring place to spend her final days. Your support helped us through these difficult times. We will always appreciate everything you did.
