Rudolph « Rudy » Elias Hanusiak
1928-2018
The death of Rudolph E. Hanusiak, Bsc.F, MscF., RPF, of
Fredericton occured on Saturday, January 27, 2018. Born in Moncton,
May 7, 1928, he was the son of the late Rudolph and Mary Hanusiak and
husband of Dorothy (Stanton).
Rudy graduated in 1952 with a degree in Forestry from UNB
following the completion of the Pre-Engineering program at St. F.X. He
also acquired a Master’s degree in Forestry in 1961 from
UNB.
Rudy was one of New Brunswick’s prominent
Foresters. He started his career with Price Bros. in
Chicoutimi, Quebec and returned to New Brunswick at the request of the
Dean of Forestry to teach at the Maritime Ranger School where he
remained until 1969, when he joined the Dept. of Economic Growth as
Director of Wood Utilization. In 1975, he was appointed
Deputy Minister of the Department of Natural Resources.
During that time, he oversaw the development, drafting and
implementation of the Crown Lands and Forest Act, which continues to
guide forest management in New Brunswick. Rudy retired in
1985, when asked to assume the position of Regional Director General
of the Canadian Forest Service, a position he held for two
years.
Rudy served in various positions during his professional
career in both the Canadian Forestry Association and the Registered
Professional Foresters of NB. He was the former President of
Forest Protection Limited, Chairman of the Board of the Ranger School
and a Director of the Hugh John Flemming Forestry Center. He
was appointed to the roster of the North American Free Trade Agreement
by the Federal Government, to the Advisory Committee to the Federal
Minister of Industry and to the Atlantic Salmon Advisory
Board. He was elected to the New Brunswick Forestry Hall of
Fame by his colleagues.
Rudy was an accomplished athlete, excelling in baseball,
rugby and basketball. He received athletic awards from both
St. FX and UNB. Following retirement, his interest turned to
golf. He represented the province on three occasions as a
member of the NB Senior Golf team. He was a member of the
Fredericton Golf Club and the Maritime Senior Golf
Association.
Rudy is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy of
Fredericton, children James and Michael (Deborah) of Halifax and
Heather (Bill) Hogan of Woodstock, grandchildren, Laura Brett
Hanusiak, Joshua (Samantha Fraser) Hanusiak, Meaghan (Mike) Gourdeau
and Sean (Lauren Juhnke) Hogan and great grandchildren, Sadie Hogan
and Liam Gourdeau, siblings, Anna (Joe) Allain, Charlotte (Jack)
Dickson, Theresa (Reg) Constantine, John Hanusiak and Barb, Frances
Roach, Dorothy (Stuart) Servant and many neices and nephews.
Rudy is predeceased by sisters, Veronica (Joe) Loree and Julia
Hanusiak.
There will be no visitation, by request. A funeral
mass will be held at St. Dunstan’s Catholic Church on Wednesday,
January 31, 2018 at 12:05 PM and a reception will follow at the
Monsignor Boyd Family Center. Internment will take place in Grande
Digue, Kent County at a later date. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made to the Dr. Everett Chalmer’s Hospital
Foundation.
The family would like to thank Dr. Cameron and the staff at
Thomas Hall for their kindness, caring and compassion.
