In Loving Memory of
Ronald died in Regina on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at the age of 102 years. He was a son of Scottish immigrants who settled in the village of Glen Ewen, where Ron was born on August 17, 1915, and where he received his elementary and secondary education.
He trained at the Moose Jaw Normal School in the 1930s and his subsequent working life was dedicated to education.
Ron married Bette (nee Hammer) in 1944 and they had had nearly 67 years together when Bette died in 2011. Ron was also predeceased by his parents Alex and Alice Mitchell; his brothers William and Russell; and his sister Alice.
He is survived by his two sons Grant (Lien) and Michael (Kari) and by grandchildren and bonus grandchildren and great grandchildren in Montreal and Norway.
Ron worked in several one-room schoolhouses in rural Saskatchewan before and after World War II. He was Superintendent of Boys’ School when it was located in Wascana Park. Employed by the Regina Board of Education until retirement age, he held a variety of positions, including being Principal at Scott, Balfour and Campbell Collegiates. Later he worked in the Board of Education office in Regina as Assistant Superintendent and spent a period of time in the office of the Minister of Education.
Ron spent nearly five years in the army during World War II, earning the rank of lieutenant. Following the war, he completed a Bachelors program at the University of Saskatchewan. During a sabbatical in 1967, he took a Masters degree in Education in Oregon.
In retirement, he travelled to Scotland and for the first time, met his Scottish kinfolk and explored the areas around Aberdeen, about which his parents had told him many stories.
Ron was involved with church work in areas of Regina where his family resided. He liked gardening and working on his cottage and his home, where he lived independently until 2016.
For many years he gave exemplary care to Bette, who developed dementia.
By Ron’s request there will be no funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, he suggested contributions to charity or medical research.
