Obituary Overview
Ronald Joseph Mitchell
Peacefully, in his sleep Ron passed away after a short illness on April 16, 2018 in his 91st year. Predeceased by the love of his life of 67 years, Ruby, he will be deeply missed by his children and grandchildren with whom he shared his life so generously. Richard, (Mary) Mitchell, Joanne (Bryan) Grossman and Kathy (Jon) Cornell. His grandchildren Laura, Andrew, Heather, Geoffrey, Nelson, Scott, Rachel, Evan and Vivian are blessed with memories of wonderful times filled with laughter spent with Gramps. Also survived by his youngest brother Dick (Esther), sisters in law Shirley Mitchell, Joan Mitchell, Eleanor McNeil and Janet (Ron) Roy.
The eldest of 5 children of his beloved parents Richard and Alice Mitchell, Ron was born in Montreal, Quebec. He met his wife Ruby in 1950 and together they moved to Kingston and settled in the Limestone City. His first job was selling Wearever Pots and Pans but Ron was extraordinarily ambitious and rarely had just 1 job, usually multiple. He served on the Kingston Fire Dept, acted as a Bailiff for the Frontenac County Court and, always wanting to work for himself, he purchased his first hotel in 1970. He was a natural at business, especially hospitality and along with Ruby, found himself in his element. At one time he owned and operated 4 businesses at the same time. While Ron retired from his daily working life at the hotel at 79 years of age, he continued to be involved in the business by consulting and advising up until his passing, a testament to his ambition and tenacity. Ron was a great friend, father, and grandfather. The family wish to express our gratitude to all his health care providers and home care team who made it possible through their understanding, support and compassion for Dad to remain at home until the end of his life.
Friends will be received at the Township Chapel of the GORDON F. TOMPKINS FUNERAL HOME, 435 Davis Drive (Centennial Dr. and Taylor-Kidd Blvd) on Sunday April 22 from 2-4 p.m. The funeral service will be held in Our Chapel on Monday April 23 at 11 a.m. with reception to follow. Donations in Ron’s honour may be made to University Hospitals Kingston Foundation – K.H.S.C.
