God took Ron from the arms of his wife and best friend of 53 years, Marguerite (Dicks) Hammond, and placed him in the arms of his Mom in heaven.
Born in Lance Cove, Wabana, to Nora and Jim Hammond.
Predeceased by his Mom and Dad, Aunt Kate and Uncle Mat Farrell (Bell Island), parents-in-law John and Madeline Dicks (St. John’s), brother Bill, brother-in-law Ron Cameron (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario), cousin Noreen Jackman (Mount Pearl), brother-in-law Mike Dicks, his wife Nellie and their son Leon, brothers-in-law, Charlie Pearcey (St. John’s) and Joe Dicks (Grand Falls).
Leaving to celebrate Ron’s life are daughter Rhonda Ryan (Robert) and their three daughters, sister Joan Cameron (Sault Ste. Marie), sisters –in-law, Irene Pearcey (Charlie), Bernadette Hoadley, Mary Power (Greg), Ada Casey and Alice Dicks of Grand Falls; brothers-in-law Dominic Dicks (Pat) and John Dicks (Jeannette). Cousins Jim and Rose Farrell Don Jackman and Loretta Light (Winnipeg) and special friends from the RNC, Jack and Bernadette Duggan, Wally Neil & Jerry Kavanagh. As well as friends Allen Thistle, Gloria and Peter Gerard (Sudbury), & Goldine and Cyril Taylor (Sault Ste. Marie); also, a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
After spending 14 years with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, Ron and Marguerite lived in Sault St. Marie and Blind River, Ontario. Ron operated a Ron’s Barber Shop, Wabana Nurseries, two locations of Ron’s Fish & Chips, a Newfoundland store, a sharpening business and a student of the Elliot Lake Flying Club.
Ron loved being involved in and contributing to community activities. Various community organizations that Ron was involved in were the Blind River Curling Club, the Bowling League he was a life member of the Lions club, Knights of Columbus, Masons and Shriners. He was Chairman of the CNIB in Northern Ontario for 15 years and started the first bowling league for the visually impaired in the area. He loved to help and couldn’t say no.
For the last two years, Ron has been sick and even though everything was done to keep him going, God had another plan. Ron took great comfort from his faith and love of God. He gave back to his parish as a Eucharistic Minister at the Health Science Centre Pastoral Care for many years.
The support system around Marguerite and Ron throughout this journey included Jean and Richard Hall, Fr. Frances Roach, Marguerite Green, Brenda and Ted Cardwell, Sharon and Keith Dawe, Dr. Lorraine (Dicks) Davis, Dr. Morkar and Dr. V. Patel, Janelle and Maria. For your kindness we thank you most sincerely. A special thank you to Jackie Dicks (John).
Cremation has taken place and private service will be held at a later date.
