Roland (Ron) James Manning, November 5, 1932 – Dec 30, 2018. Roland passed gently in his sleep. He was pre-deceased by his parents Samuel and Bridget Manning of Torbay; sisters Shirley Roche, Noreen Butler, and Mary Augusta Bulger; brother Francis Manning; and grandson Tyller Wilson Pittman.
Mourning him is his wife of 63 years Elizabeth Margaret Manning (Wilson); children Michele Manning (Wayne), Kevin Manning, Patricia Ban (Ted), Derek Manning, Raylene Manning-Puddister (Darren), Roland Manning; sisters Eleanor Mahon (Mike-deceased), Marie Gosse (Maurice), Patrick Manning (Bridget), Agnes Connors (Patrick-deceased), Madeline Manning, Ethel Lahey (Fred); grandchildren Jennifer Boone (Christopher), Kristina and Karolyn Manning; Mitchel Bradbury, Nicole and Christopher Ban, Sonja Pittman, Keelan Cole, Kaden and Sierra Manning; great grandchildren Lauren and Nicholas Boone; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Roland lived a large life. He was a boy from the small town of Torbay who dreamed big.
Roland joined the Navy as a 17 year old during the Korean conflict and toured Southeast Asia and Australia. His plan was to remain in the navy until he met Elizabeth Wilson in Hamilton, Ontario, where they married and then moved back to NL in 1957 to live in his hometown of Torbay where they raised 6 children.
He rose to the position of Vice President of JC Pratt’s and then started his own business, Manning Distributors and other business ventures.
Throughout his life he volunteered at his church in Torbay and then St. John’s. For over 50 years Roland was a member and volunteer at the Legion #56,Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge #245, St. Andrew Masonic Lodge #1139, and Mazol Shriners.
Roland was Mayor of Torbay in the early 1980’s and ran for the Liberal Party in St John’s East in 1979. He always loved a challenge.
Roland was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved to sing and dance. He also brought joy to others while playing his Ugly Stick.
Roland and his family spent many summers camping throughout Newfoundland. He loved visiting family in Canada and the USA.
Thank you to the doctors and nurses at Health Science and Miller Centre for the excellent care that Roland received.

Resting at Caul’s Funeral Home, TORBAY on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 from 7 p.m.- 9 p.m. and Thursday, January 3, 2019 from 10 a.m.- 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will take place on Friday, January 4,2019 at 9:30 a.m. from Mary Queen of Peace Church, Torbay Road with cremation to follow.
