Obituary of Robert Winsborrow
It is with heavy hearts that we share in the loss of Robert Winsborrow on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at the age of 88 years. Robert was the son of the late Burt and Evelyn Winsborrow of Taunton, England. Brother of the late Mary Fussell, also of England, Robert was a member of the Queen’s Navy during the Second World War. He became a printer while in England and immigrated to Canada in the mid 1950s. Robert worked at the Welland Tribune for 20 years as a compositor. He also ran a successful carpentry business for local patrons. He engaged in many hobbies over the years, including a martial arts instructor to Niagara Regional Police, and was an avid golfer and billiards player. AND He loved to walk! His regular routine was many kilometres in length. He could hike up mountainsides faster and farther than his children and grandchildren. For people who knew Bob, they remember him as an affable and easy-going man who always had a ready smile. From one of his nephews in England: “He was a great bloke, helpful and with a wicked sense of humour.” In his later years, Robert spent each winter in Mexico, his second home, and would take the long route back to Ontario, driving on his own from Mexico to California, Vancouver, Calgary and across Canada each year, staying with his children along the way. He will be deeply missed by his children: Ken and Maria Winsborrow; Jo’Anna and the late Tim Carter; Kevin and Annie Winsborrow; Beatrice Winsborrow; and, Eric and Chizuru Winsborrow. He also left behind 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Friends are invited to visit at BALLARD-MINOR FUNERAL HOME, 315 BROAD ST, DUNNVILLE, ON THUSDAY EVENING from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. The funeral service will be held in the chapel of the funeral home on Friday, March 16, 2018 at 11 am (visitation from 10-10:45). A memorial gathering will be held at Jo’Anna Carter’s home in Welland beginning at 1:30 pm. If desired, donations to Habitat for Humanity would be appreciated by the family.
