Obituary for
Robert Saunders
SAUNDERS, ROBERT JOHN (Bob) « ZIBBER »
It is with profound sadness that the family of Bob advise of his passing on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at the Ottawa Heart Institute, just shy of his 93rd birthday.
Bob was born in Kingston, Ontario on July 25, 1925 to James and Jewel Saunders. He was predeceased by three siblings, Alan (Joyce) Saunders, Margaret Smyth and Jean (Doug) Creighton. Bob served in the Navy during WWII and worked for the family business the Allan Lumber Company on Victoria Street in Kingston when he returned from the war. He later worked for the Frontenac County School Board as a custodian for over 25 years and made many friends at KCVI, Victoria and Winston Churchill schools.
But Bob’s passion was his family and the wonderful life that he made with the love of his life, Shirley. He married Shirley Joan Martin (1930 – 2017) on June 11, 1949 and they shared 68 years together in a marriage which was admired by all who knew them. They were always seen holding hands whenever they were together. His three children and their spouses, grandchildren and their partners, and his great grandchildren will miss him deeply – he was the rock of the family and a friend to all who knew him. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Debbie Saunders of Stittsville and his two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Andy Hall of Richmond and Lee and Rob Campbell of Kingston. He was extremely proud of his seven granddaughters and their spouses and they will all miss him dearly: Kim Saunders Henneberry, Keri Saunders, Andrea Glandon (Layne), Tracey Primeau (Kyle), Sarah Carter (Ross), Erica Simpson (Remy) and Stefanie Bourada (John). He was BIG grandpa to eleven great grandchildren and BIG had a special relationship with each of them: Becca Henneberry, Kyle Glandon, Matthew Henneberry, Abby Glandon, Olivia Primeau, Evelyn Carter, Quinn Simpson, Graham Carter, Grady Bourada, Halle Bourada and Ellis Simpson. He loved children and children loved him.
Bob and Shirley’s biggest joy was being with their family and they loved having the family together at their cottages on Dalhousie Lake. The family spent summers together at the lake their whole lives and Bob had been going there since he was a young boy himself. Without a doubt, Dalhousie Lake was his happy place. Together Bob and Shirley loved to socialize with friends and family and play cards – most notably six-handed euchre. Bob loved listening to his favorite music – Louis Jordan, Diana Krall, Frank Sinatra to name a few.
The family is hosting a Celebration of Bob’s life on Friday, July 27th at Wartman Funeral Home, Collins Bay Road, Kingston from 1 pm to 4 p.m. Please join them for food and drink, and to share some memories (2:00 p.m.) and maybe even some music and cards. Donations to UHKF – KGH will be gratefully accepted. Bob wanted his friends and family to remember him with the song : Happy Trails To You….. until we meet again.
