OBITUARY
Rita Euphemia Melanson-Swan
October 20, 1943 – November 4, 2018
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rita Melanson-Swan on November 4th, 2018, but we know that she has moved on to a better world.
Rita was born in Pomquet, Antigonish County, to the late Leo and Josephine Melanson. She moved to Halifax at a young age to work at the naval dockyard as a supervisor in accounts payable, which is where she met her adoring husband, Jack Swan. They were married in April of 1987 and spent their years creating a warm and generous life together here in Halifax.
Well known in her community, and to everyone who knew her, Rita was the absolute kindest soul one would ever wish to meet. She was a cat lover, exceptional gardener, great blueberry pie baker, and a faithful volunteer at Northwood as well as in her Church. She also saw the importance of giving to various charities and to those in need. Rita was a fan of many restaurants, but especially Jim’s on the Bedford Highway and Cousin’s on Robie Street, due to the special rapport she held with the staff. She gave so much to her niece and nephews, going above and beyond for Christmas, hockey season, and many other special times throughout the years. As a fan of travel, Rita was happy to explore new places with her husband Jack, and was always quick to make a new friend wherever she was. She always had something positive to say about everyone.
She will be dearly missed by her loving husband, Jack; stepsons Stephen (Donna) and William (Paula); step-grandchildren Cameron and Caelin; goddaughter and niece, Dale (Brian); nephews Robert (Lynda), Stan (Melanie), Dean (Renee), and Terry (Valerie); as well as many grandnephews and grandnieces.
There will be no visitation. Cremation will take place prior to the Funeral Service being held on Tuesday, November 13th at 11 am at St. Mother Teresa of Kolkota Church, 6032 Normandy Dr in Halifax. Reception to follow in the Church Hall.
Rita and her family were always very impressed with the staff at various Halifax hospitals, none more so than the Cardiovascular ICU in the Halifax Infirmary; her care could not have been surpassed. The surgical team must be commended for their tireless attempts to save Rita, but alas her poor heart was just too damaged. From our own hearts, damaged now in a very profound way, we want to thank you. God Bless you all.
