Dr. Richard (Dick) Wylie MD, FRCS, FACS passed away peacefully at home, on December 31st in his 78th year.
Dick graduated from the University of Western Ontario medical school in 1964, interned at Victoria Hospital in London, and completed his surgical training program under Dr. Angus McLachlin. In 1969 he joined the partnership of surgeons Dr. John McLachlin and Dr. Robert Farley, serving the community of St. Thomas/Elgin until retiring at age 65. Dick was not only a fine surgeon, but also an avid birder and occasional hunter. He had a passion for sports, not just as an observer, but also as a participant. Golfing, skiing, tennis……he loved them all. Dick and Pat travelled extensively; cruising became the favorite mode. He had a long term passion for the Classics, both in literature and music. He turned the family cottage on Lorimer Lake into a cosy retreat, custom designing and creating whatever was needed. Many of his pieces grace the homes of his children as well. He was the quintessential handyman. No task was too difficult for him. No day was complete without tackling the Globe and Mail cryptic cross word puzzle, although he was not a fan of the Saturday offering. Dick is survived by his loving wife Pat (nee Baird) of over 55 years, his wonderful sons Paul (Katrina), Brian (Nicole) and beautiful daughter Heather. He adored his children, and his grandchildren Rebecca, Cassia, Brenna, Maren and Nathaniel. Dick was the beloved son of William and Laura Wylie of Dundas, little brother to Bill (deceased) of Thornhill, and father of infant daughter Sandra. He is also survived by a dear sister Lynn (Bednarz), many beloved nieces and nephews and other family members. He will be sorely missed. Cremation has taken place. Private interment and life celebration with family and close friends will take place at a later date.
