Richard John Scott Q.C.
1953-2018
It is with sadness that the family of Richard J. Scott, Q.C.,
announces his sudden death at home on August 20, 2018. Born in
Fredericton, NB, on July 23, 1953, he was the son of the late Richard
Gordon and Roberta (Loane) Scott.
He is survived by his brother, David (Deanna); nephew, Joseph
(Kayla Chong); nieces, Elizabeth Price (Kyle), Rebecca Scott, Rachel
MacLean (Thomas), and Christina Scott (Timothy Roberts); as well as
close friends, Ken Sandall and Carol Hamilton.
Richard was a lawyer in Fredericton for over 40 years.
Recently, his practice focused on legal research supporting litigation
matters and he had great success as an appellate advocate. During his
career Richard was a leader in the legal profession, initially serving
as President of the NB Law Society in 2012-13 and was the current
President Elect of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada. He also
lectured part time at UNB for over 25 years teaching courses related
to commercial law in both the Faculties of Law and
Engineering.
Richard lived for and loved the law and there is no member of
the law society who has given more volunteer hours than him. He will
be sadly missed by his friends and by his colleagues at McInnis
Cooper.
Richard had many interests and was a member of various groups
and associations. He was a member of the Canadian Assocation for Legal
Ethics and the Ethics Committee of the Law Society of New Brunswick.
He was appointed an Honorary Fellow of Engineering Canada in honor of
his exceptional contributions to the engineering profession in Canada.
He was also former President of the UNB Alumni Assocation and a former
member of UNB Board of Governors and Academic Senates.
Richard was a life long member of Wilmot United Church
serving in various capacities over the years and was a member of the
Gilbert and Sullivan Society. He loved music and was known for his
wonderful singing voice. He was an avid animal lover and had a
tremendous sense of humour.
Visitation will be held at McAdam’s Funeral Home on Sunday,
August 26, from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. A memorial service will be held
at Wilmot United Church on Monday, August 27, 2018 at 2 pm with Rev.
Ellen Beairsto officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard’s
memory can be made to Wilmot United Church or UNB.
