Richard Halliday 2018

Obituary Overview
Richard Halliday
With heavy hearts, we announce the sudden passing of Richard Halliday on Saturday May 5, 2018.
Richard was born on the Bay of Fundy in Digby, Nova Scotia. A loving and supportive husband of Helen (Howes) Halliday for more than 30 years, and the abundantly proud father of Austin and Douglas. He and Helen met in Calgary, and he embraced each of the cities they lived in across Canada over the years, but first and foremost, he was a proud Nova Scotian. At the time of his death, the family was rooted in their beloved Winnipeg, and at the “Halliday Inn,” their Eagle Bay home near Kenora.
Richard earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of New Brunswick (Saint John). He enjoyed a varied and successful professional career in operations/sales and marketing with Holiday Inn, CP Hotels (Fairmont), the Winnipeg Convention Centre, Skyward Aviation and Manitoba Lotteries. He took immense satisfaction from his work for the North End Community Renewal Corporation and most recently, as President and CEO of the Assiniboia Chamber of Commerce while being part of the larger Chamber movement/family.
Richard will be remembered by his family and many friends and colleagues for his quiet, steady, and effective leadership of projects near and dear to his heart, his love of singing and dancing, his passion for war history and art—he will be most remembered for his sarcastic wit with a smirk that left very few untouched. Most at home by the water—best if combined with salt air—Richard was the social director and consummate host at the Halliday Inn, a dream with Helen which became a reality and their sanctuary. A curler, golfer, and a sports dad who met his Charleswood “soul mates” that he adored. Words cannot express how sorely he will be missed by so many that loved him.
Richard is survived by his mother Joan and sister Shaunda McCully (Kevin); parents-in-law Bill and Merle Howes; and brothers and sisters-in-law Craig Howes and Sara Collins and Wynn and Sharon Howes. He was a wonderful uncle to Seth Howes (Linda Langness), Kasha Burke (Ryan), and Kalesha McCully (Kyle), and the best of great uncles to Maeva Langness and Harlow Burke. He was predeceased by his father Wellington (Welly) in 2011.
A celebration of Richard’s life will be held at Charleswood United Church, 4820 Roblin Blvd, Winnipeg, on Friday, May 11th at 10:00 am. A reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Richard’s memory to the North End Community Renewal Corporation (NECRC); Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation; or Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada.
