On December 2, 2018, Michael Murphy of St. Albert passed away at the age of 100 years. He is the son of Joseph Andrew Murphy and Helen Shea – born on May 5, 1918. He attended St. Thomas Aquinas grade school and St. Mary’s college in Halifax before moving on to the Redemptorist St. Mary’s College in Brockville, ON. Having decided to become a Redemptorist, he took his first vows on August 2, 1938 and was ordained a priest on June 20, 1943
His first appointment took him to Dawson Creek, B.C. where he was also a part time chaplain to the American Army who were building the famous Alaska Highway. Father Joe served as pastor and superior in the Redemptorist parishes of Dawson Creek, Williams Lake, B.C., where he built a lovely new church, Saskatoon and Winnipeg. He also served in Edmonton, Yorkton, Grande Prairie and Calgary. At one point he was the Bursar at Holy Redeemer College Edmonton and a Vocation Director for the Province of Edmonton.
In addition to his priestly duties he was very involved with the Knights of Columbus wherever he was stationed. In 1999 he moved to the Redemptorist retirement community at Villa Marguerite in Edmonton which he was instrumental in organizing.
He will be loved and greatly missed by his confreres in the Redemptorist Order, his family and his many friends which he made over the years. “Thanks to you all, especially the staff at Youville Home and the Grey Nuns.”
