OBITUARY
Reiki Kaita
April 18, 1932 – August 20, 2018
After a recent battle with pulmonary fibrosis, Reiki Kaita passed away on August 20, 2018, surrounded by family at the Cowichan District Hospital in Duncan, BC.
Reiki was born to Sukeichi and Kameyo Kaita on April 18, 1932, in Pitt Meadows, BC. He attended school there until the family was relocated to Manitoba during WWII. He furthered his education in Manitoba in the field of data processing.
Reiki’s early experience working on farms in Manitoba led to a lifelong love of gardening. His skills and passion were reflected in the two Vancouver Island gardening contest awards he won. They were also amply apparent in the beautiful surroundings he created at his homes in Winnipeg and Cowichan Bay. He and his wife, Hiroko, built a wonderful paradise on their 5-acre property, with Reiki working continuously and with pure love to prune, plant, and harvest a wide variety of flowers, fruits, and vegetables.
Reiki’s character was as cultivated and beautiful as his garden, and he was loved and respected by many. He was unwaveringly generous, fair, and honest. He was also a doer, demonstrating great perseverance and always working without a hint of complaint or resentment. Above all, he loved his Hiroko. He was a tremendous role-model, passing many of his qualities and skills to his kids and grandkids.
Reiki is survived by his beloved wife Hiroko; sons Alvin (Pek Har) and Alan (Theresa); daughter Sandra (Gord); grandchildren Dianne, Alexander, Stephen, Paul, Matthew, and Jaden; great grandchildren Lauren and Jackson; brother Fred; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A private family service will be held in Vancouver. Donations can be made in Reiki’s name to the Cowichan District Hospital Foundation, 101- 5822 Garden St. Duncan, BC V9L 3V9.
