Reg spent his early years on the Alliance area farm home. He had a trap line at eleven years of age. On Saturdays he collected the catch and reset the traps. After dragging them home he skinned and prepared them for shipment to The Bay in Edmonton. The revenue provided food and necessities for the family. In his teens he left home and hired out wherever work was available.
After he left the farm he attended college in Red Deer, and completed high school. He was determined, passionate, and energetic in everything he did, including sports until 1950 when a hunting accident left him with over one hundred 12-guage repeater shotgun pellets in his thigh that remained there for the rest of his life. He endured pain and health problems throughout his lifetime due to the incident.
Reg attended Transport Canada training, in Vancouver, followed by a position as radio operator. He advanced in his training and abilities and was successful in position promotions. He concluded his career as the Electronics Maintenance Manager at various B.C. airports. He was highly regarded and respected by his employers and by those that he supervised. He trained/tutored recently graduated technicians when their postings were under his management. He was a R.E.T. (Registered Engineering/Electronics Technologist) with A.S.E.T. After regular work hours he was always busy; he undertook many projects in home construction, electrical, mechanics, and/or anything else, often as a volunteer handyman to friends and in church construction. He devoted his limited spare time to music.
He met Alice at Calgary North Hill Church. They were married in 1954 and were active in church activities as singers and instrumentalists. After recruiting men for a quartet, in Terrace, Reg co-ordinated practices and engagements for them. They, the ‘Good News Quartet’, sang in churches Terrace, Prince Rupert, Kitimat, and Prince George for eight years accompanied by Alice on the keyboard. After their last move Terrace to Kelowna, Reg & Alice as the two ‘Gospel Messengers’, continued to enjoy God’s blessing for many years in their music ministry throughout the Okanagan Valley. They presented their music, no charge, to care facilities, senior residences, and/or to any location that extended an invitation to them.
