Obituary for Phyllis Genevieve Hill (nee Kokko)
It is with great sadness we advise that Phyllis died peacefully on Sunday, June 10 at Scarborough General Hospital at age 69. Phyllis had a sudden and severe cerebral hemorrhage June 2 and never regained consciousness. Phyllis is survived by her son Graeme Andrew Hill (Stephanie Flynn) of Victoria, BC, Graeme’s father John Clark Hill of Scarborough, ON, brother Eric Gerard Kokko (Marion Joan née Earle) of Campbell River, BC, brother Gregory Lawrence Kokko of North York, ON, nephew Paul Kokko of Edmonton, AB, niece Anne Kokko of Yellowknife, NT; predeceased by mother Helen Loretta Kokko (née Moloney) and father Vilho « Vic » Andrew Kokko. Phyllis will be greatly missed by friends, colleagues and members of the Hill, Kokko and Moloney families. From an early age camping with her family Phyllis loved outdoor recreation, including canoeing, skiing, orienteering and horse riding. She was awarded the Gold Cord in Girl Guides and worked in Outdoor Education at the Sheldon Valley Centre. She was a graduate of York University and returned to York as an instructor in the Teacher Education Program. Phyllis had a long and distinguished career as an educator from Teacher to Superintendent of Schools in the East York and Toronto School Boards. She was a Vice-Principal and Principal at Cosburn Middle School, Valley Park Middle School and Bessborough Elementary and Middle School in Toronto. Phyllis enjoyed music, world travel, concerts and theatre and was an enthusiastic supporter of Toronto sports including The Blue Jays and Raptors. A funeral service will be held at Saint Martin’s Church, 513 Ennis Road, Ennismore, ON K0L1T0 on Saturday, June 23 at 10:00 A.M., with interment at the adjoining Saint Martin’s Cemetery. Following the ceremony family and friends are invited to gather at Saint Martin’s Parish Hall. A Celebration of Life will also take place in East York; details to follow. The family is very grateful for the kind and professional services of Dr. Howard Clasky and the doctors, nurses and staff at Scarborough General Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada at www.heartandstroke.ca will be gratefully appreciated.
