Obituary Overview
In Loving Memory
CARMAN, Philip Douglas
After a long, productive and interesting life, Doug passed away on Saturday, August 11 at the ripe old age of 101. Doug is now once again with his loving wife Margaret, who passed away in 2011, and his eldest son James, who left us too early in 2013. Doug will be missed and remembered with love by his sons John and Bill, his daughters-in-law Tina and Leslie, his grandchildren Elizabeth, Allison, Kayla and Jessica, his great-grandchildren Emily, Edward and Sarah, their father Jeff Van Wart, family friend Ellen Shaw, and cousins Laurie and Cadie Clayton.
Beginning in the Second World War, Doug worked for over 40 years as a Research Physicist, specializing in optics, at the National Research Council of Canada. During this time, he worked on innumerable projects, including a stint representing Canada at the International Standards Organization.
Outside of his professional life, his passions included sailing, cross-country skiing and hiking in the Gatineau hills. For many years, Doug, was Director of Trails for the Ottawa Ski Club. During his tenure many of the existing ski trails at Camp Fortune were established and maintained by a volunteer group known as the Trail Riders. Doug’s passion for cross-country skiing continued well into his 90s.
As a sailor, Doug was a long-time member of the Britannia Boating Club and founding member of the Britannia Yacht Club. In his early days, he sailed an International 14 by the name of Lady Esther. With his crew and his Lady, Doug was almost unbeatable, gaining may accolades and awards for his sailing prowess. Lady Esther is now part of the collection of the Canadian Science and Technology Museum.
As a father, Doug taught his three sons the value of hard work, honesty and healthy living. These are values that guided him through his long life of 101 years, and that his family will continue to carry with them in the years to come. Thanks Dad. We will not forget.
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Philip Douglas Carman 2018.
