In Loving Memory Of
Peter Winia
Peter Winia, resident of Grande Prairie, passed away on Monday, May 7, 2018, at the age of 95 years.
Peter was born on August 18, 1922, in Follega, Netherlands. He was the eldest of thirteen children born to Jelle and Geeske Winia. After grade eight, Peter attended four years of agricultural school. He then worked for the government reclaiming land in the Noord Oost Polder.
Peter married Jantje “Jenny” Breemer, on the 22nd of January 1948. Two months later, they immigrated to Canada, arriving in Halifax at Pier 21 on the SS Kota Inten. Peter farmed at Loreburn, SK, Picture Butte, AB and Spirit River until retiring to Abbotsford in 1976. Pete and Jenny enjoyed their retirement years in Abbotsford and Peter often found part time jobs to keep himself busy. Peter and Jenny returned to Grande Prairie in 1994 to be closer to family.
After Jenny’s passing, Peter enjoyed his last 14 years as a resident of Emerald Gardens, an independent living complex for seniors. He made many friends there and remained active playing pool and floor curling.
He will be sadly missed by his children: Gerry (Loretta), John (Barb), Tony (Lise), Hilda (Pat Wozniak), and George (Rhonda); twelve grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by his brothers and sisters in Holland: Elisabeth, Jetske, Maaike, Geke, Sjoukje, Fokje, Pieter, Annie, and Marten.
He was predeceased by his wife Jenny in 1999; his parents; three brothers: Henk, Siep and Anton; and four brothers in-law.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, May 11, 2018, at 1:30pm, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grande Prairie (9929 105 Ave), with Pastor Greg Anderson officiating.
A Private Interment will be held prior at the White Mountain Cemetery.
