Peter Jakob DYCK
November 6, 1929 – March 15, 2018
Peter Jakob Dyck of Calgary, passed away on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at the age of 88 years.
He graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1954 and headed out on a road trip through the States with his buddy and classmate, Earl Scott. They ended up in Alberta where they both began careers in the oilfield. Peter worked for B/A Oil which later became Gulf Canada. It was in the office in Stettler that he met Sonia, and they married. After several transfers between Calgary, Stettler and Pincher Creek, Peter joined Dekalb Petroleum where he was able to settle with his family in Calgary. He worked his way up and became VP of Operations in his final years at the company, retiring in 1987. It was through his career that he met and maintained many good friends who he and Sonia saw regularly.
Peter enjoyed a number of hobbies. In his younger years he was a lifeguard on the shores of Lake Erie. Later he built and flew radio controlled aircraft. For a couple of years, he was the president of Sylvancrest Riding Club where he became proficient at putting on horse shows. After his retirement he developed a passion for Mennonite genealogy contributing to many books and world wide projects. He and Sonia also loved to travel and went on many trips and cruises. This was a tradition son Jack carried on with them as they aged. Peter was also an avid walker; he especially enjoyed walking Bowness Park with Sonia until her death in 2005.
Peter leaves his three children, one grandson and two great grandsons.
He was predeceased by his lifemate Sonia, his parents, all five of his brothers, and his grandson Reid. He will be dearly missed by his children and grandchildren.

We would like to thank the staff at Carewest Colonel Belcher, Rocky Ridge Retirement Community, Unit 46 at the Foothills Hospital, and the staff at The Brenda Strafford Foundation’s Clifton Manor for making his last days comfortable. Dad struggled with dementia but was always cheerful until the end. We will be forever grateful to Britney Rasmussen and Cathy Sheridan of Daughter on Demand for the compassion and help they gave Dad in his final years.
