Peter Gilbert Toews was born to Peter and Eva Toews on November 19, 1929 in Steinbach, Manitoba. He peacefully passed away at the Maplewood Manor in Steinbach, Manitoba, on July 21, 2018 at the age of eighty-eight.
Dad spent his growing up years in the St Anne area. He was only seven years old when his father passed away and started working at the early age of fifteen, to help care for his mother and siblings who were still at home.
Dad gave his heart to the Lord at outdoor meetings by the river in the Ste. Anne neighborhood. Later, after moving to Steinbach, he was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite at the age of eighteen. His faith was precious to him and he embraced it to the end.
On July 7, 1954, he married Leona Wiebe in Steinbach, Manitoba. They enjoyed sixty-four years together. Dad and Mom’s love for each other was a special example to their children.
Dad made many friends and won the respect of people whom he dealt with. He was quite young when he started working at Brandt Sheet Metal. After joining his father-in-law and brother-in-law in the farm equipment business, he spent many years selling tractors and implements to farmers in southeastern Manitoba. Dad spent a few years doing yard care and planning well organized yards for employers and friends. Many will remember his green thumb and knowledge in horticulture, stopping and asking planting and pruning advice. He retired after spending eight years as Administrator for the Maplewood Manor.
Dad and Mom lived in Steinbach and just before moving to Maplewood Manor from their condo at Stonebridge Crossing, he suffered several strokes. This resulted in him moving into full care and Mom keeping the apartment in the self-care suites. They loved living at Maplewood and we children greatly appreciate the loving care Dad received till the end. He also enjoyed visits from business acquaintances and employees who took time to drop in to visit and reminisce.
Dad was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He cared deeply for all of us and held a special place in his heart for all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Those left to cherish fond memories are his wife, Leona, and their children: Rob and Laurie, Steinbach, Manitoba; Margaret and Rodney Wohlgemuth, Beausejour, Manitoba; Ralph and Jennice, Steinbach, Manitoba; Peter and Jessica, Edmonton, Alberta; nine grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren; one brother Donald, Calgary, Alberta; two sisters-in-law; Leanna Wiebe, Steinbach, Manitoba; Kathleen and Louis Barkman, Neepawa, Manitoba.
He was predeceased by his parents, parents-in-law, two brothers, three sisters, two sisters-in-law and four brothers-in-law.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Maplewood Manor for the loving care Dad received there.
The funeral will be held on Thursday July 26, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the Rosewood Church of God in Christ, 2 miles west of Ste. Anne, MB on Hwy 210, with a viewing prior to the service.
