Obituary for
Paul « Paavo » Rainonen
Paul (Paavo) Sakari Rainonen died on July 4, 2018 at his home at the age of 72 after a long struggle with prostate cancer. He is survived by his son Brendan (and Peta-Gaye) and his sister Tuula (and Richard) Gross as well as Brendan’s mother Sheila Rainonen. Paul was predeceased by his parents Maire and Pauli.
Paul was born in Turku, Finland and his family moved to Canada in 1951, settling in Winnipeg in the Wolseley area where Paul went to school.
Paul studied to become a computer programmer/ systems analyst and worked in the IT sector for various employers for most of his career. He enjoyed his time at the family cottage at Pointe du Bois, especially taking photographs. Paul loved music, especially jazz, and still had at least 300 vinyl records. He was a reader with eclectic tastes, enjoying books about cars and sports as much as history and politics.
The family would like to sincerely thank CancerCare Manitoba, Home Care, and Palliative Care for their ongoing care over the past 3 years, the Grace Hospital for his recent stay, and HomeInstead Senior Care for their 24 hour care and support over the past 3 months. He was treated with compassion and respect by all of you.
Paul was cremated as he wished. An informal wake will be held at 1249 Dominion Street on Thursday July 12 from 3-6pm.
Donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society if desired.
