Oneita Downey
Oneita Downey, age 84 of North Preston, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2018 at the Dartmouth General Hospital surrounded by love. She was the wife of an Army War Veteran, the late Peter Jr. Downey and daughter of the late Francis Downey Sr. and Ida Mae Smith Downey. Oneita was a faithful member of St. Thomas Baptist Church and a member of the BYPU. Oneita worked as a commercial cleaner in Halifax. She also became a homemaker for many years and loved to knit, sew and doing fish fry. She took pride in making and distributing her handmade wreaths with 2 of her grand-daughters, Tylea and Janita, also her best friend Adeline Fraser.
She is survived by children; Murdock (Sandra) Toronto, Rodrick (Linda) North Preston, Darcella North Preston, Bonita (Isreal) Brampton, Myra (Stewart) Milton, Murphy, Joseph Jr. (Lavona), Desty, and Santonio Dartmouth, 27 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, brothers; Flemming (Violet), Albert (Patricia), Conrad all of North Preston, sisters; Stella North Preston, Margaret (Leslie) Bradford, Burley and Mildred North Preston, Murtle Halifax, godchildren; Coneeta Tupper, Antonio Willis, Venessa Smith, Jasmine Beals, Minas Downey, Tekara Smith, and Kayla Smith.
Oneita was predeceased by son; Jason, daughter; Janice, sisters; Adeline, Clara, Janie, and Lavon, brothers; Francis, Angus, Perry and Clyde.
Best lifelong friend; Adeline Fraser, Special daughter; Micah Smith, Special daughter in law; Linda Downey, Special son; Mickey Beals, Special nieces; Mildred Clayton and Violet Johnson, special friends; Gloria Simmonds, Violet Glasgow, Margaret Downey (sister in law), Marilyn Fraser, Brenda Colley, Cathy Downey, Rose Marie Downey (Boodie) and Amanda Smith Beals. She will be missed by several nieces, nephews, friends and in-laws.
A public visitation will be held on Friday April 6th from 12-1 pm at St. Thomas Baptist Church followed by a Celebration of Life at 1 PM with burial following the service in the St. Thomas Baptist Church cemetery.
The family would like to thank all of those who visited, prayers, phone calls, sent flowers and supported us in our time of bereavement. Please continue to pray for us as we travel through this journey.
