Obituary Overview
Olga Wilke
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Olga Wilke on Friday, March 16, 2018. Olga died peacefully in her sleep at the Sherbrooke Community Centre in Saskatoon.
Olga was born in the Model Farm district near West Bend, Saskatchewan on July 22, 1924. She was the seventh of twelve children born to Simeon and Orushka Novak. Olga spoke fondly of her early childhood years on the family farm. As a young adult, she accompanied her sister to St. Boniface, Manitoba where she was employed at a Sunny Boy Cereal factory. Olga married Joe Wilke at the age of 29, and became the wife of the West Bend Pool elevator agent. It was during this time that Olga’s skills as a very competent and creative seamstress were discovered. For years to come Olga would have a steady stream of customers at her door. Olga had a competitive streak, and loved to take part in local curling bonspiels with her team of girlfriends. She also loved to play a few rounds of cards, especially three-spot, with visitors.
Olga was a great cook, always wanting to try new recipes. She loved gardening and grew beautiful flowers and quantities of vegetables that she would give away to others.
Olga was well known for her generosity and desire to help others. Her greatest demonstration of this was when she opened her heart and home, adopting two boys, Lee and James. To her family, she will always be remembered as a devout believer, hard-working yet spunky, fun loving mother who filled the home with her songs and humming. As she aged, dementia attempted to ravage her, but it never stole her spirit or her song. She hummed her way home to heaven and the Savior she served her entire life.
Olga is survived by her son James Wilke (Brigitte), one remaining sibling, Anthony Novak, also grandchildren, Sheldon, Nicole, Melissa, Jyllenna, and Bronson, as well as several loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by husband Joseph and son Lee. Our family is truly grateful to the staff of Sherbrooke Community Centre for the kindness and care provided to Olga.
The Prayers for Olga will be held on Friday, March 23, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. and the Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 3:00 p.m., both at St. Volodymyr Villa, 3102 Louise Place. Interment in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens to follow.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan at 1405 Faulkner Crescent, Saskatoon, SK. S7L 3R5.
