It is with deep sadness that we say goodbye to our mother, Olga. As part of the immigrant wave after World War II, she proved to be strong and resourceful as she and our father established themselves in their new country.
Olga was predeceased by her beloved husband Bruno, her brother Ugo, and her sister Anita Pfleger. She is survived by her daughter Grace (Douglas McKirgan), her son Ugo (Lynn McAuley) and her grandchildren Conor Adami, Ellis Adami, and Clancy Adami. She leaves extended family in Italy, and in England she is survived by her niece Nadia Pfleger, her grand-nephew Jordan Pfleger, and her nephew Mark Pfleger.
Born in San Daniele del Friuli, our mother spent her teenage years in Genova and only returned to Friuli when Genova was bombed. It was a traumatic time for the family with the imprisonment of her mother several times, followed by the death of her brother, a Partisan, in the final days of the war. It was here that she met again Bruno, an old schoolmate, with whom she would share her life. She often spoke of his military service as a Bersagliere on the Russian front. They came to Canada, sponsored by Olga’s aunt who was living in Sudbury.
It is impossible to describe adequately the difficulties of moving to a new country where one needs to learn the language and new conventions. Despite everything, our parents flourished. They were always grateful for Canada’s – and Sudbury’s – welcome and for all the possibilities offered to them and their children.
After 50 years in Sudbury, having lost our father, our mother looked south and joined Grace in Oakville for another healthy 15 years. She was always very active, preferring walking to a bus or taxi. She continued cooking for the family, teaching her son-in-law Doug some of her delicious recipes, and always finding something to mend. At 90 years old, she expressed the same surprise at her longevity as she had voiced at age 80. Unfortunately, this was the time that she began to experience the health problems that slowly stole her independence from her.
A big ‘thank you’ to all who cared for our mother before she entered Tansley Woods Long Term Care. We are most grateful to all the staff on Brant for their care and compassion. Our thanks to Moreau and Dolly, her dedicated carers, and also to you, Jan, for keeping Mom company on Friday mornings.
There will be no visitation. Funeral Mass will be held at 1pm on Friday, June 1 at St. Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church, 47 Reynolds Street in Oakville, followed by a reception in the church hall. Interment will be at St. Jude’s Cemetery on Lakeshore Road West, after the reception.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to our mother’s favourite charity, the ‘Sick Kids Foundation’.
