Olga Sackney
October 24, 1921 – October 28, 2018
Olga Sackney of Canora, SK, passed away peacefully at the Canora Gateway Lodge on October 28, 2018, at the age of 97 with her daughter Helen by her side. Olga was born on October 24, 1921, in the Bellendeen District, to Joseph and Helen (Tomchyshyn) Gondziola. She attended school in the area and attained a Grade 8 education. She was the eldest of a family of nine (8 daughters and 1 son) children. Olga married Metro Sackney in 1939. They took over Metro’s parent’s farm where they raised their three children (Larry, Betty and Helen). As a housewife and farming partner, Olga worked alongside her husband in developing the land. A month after they were married, a fire destroyed the house and all its contents. Of course, there was no insurance at the time. They opened up the land, planted various crops, and raised a diversity of animals. Olga told the story of sending 30 dozen eggs to the Canora Dairy Creamery and having to pay to get their egg carton back from the railway. She always planted a large garden and did a lot of canning. In September 1966, a tornado went through their farm and destroyed most of the buildings. Life was difficult in the beginning, but they worked hard and developed strong family relationships and friendships. Sundays were spent going to church and visiting with family and friends.
They moved to Canora in 1975 and ran the golf course for several years. They made many friendships there and many evenings subsequently were spent playing cards and eating good food. Olga’s husband died on February 7, 1993. She spent numerous hours making perogies at Rainbow Hall for the church dinners and as fundraising activities.
In October of 2014, Olga moved into Park Place, a senior’s home. She enjoyed her time at Park Place until her recent illness. In June of 2018, with declining health, she was placed in Gateway Lodge.
Olga was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Helen; and sisters, Dehlia Witzko, Nettie Sliziak, Myrtle Sliziak, and Mathilda Tiechko. She is survived by her son, Dr. Lawrence « Larry » (Kathleen) of Vancouver; daughters, Betty (Gary) McCormick of Winnipeg and Helen (Donald) Strelieff of Regina; grandchildren: Blair (Karine) Sackney, Leanne Sackney (Phillip Peabody), Lee McCormick, Corry Mann, Kelly Strelieff (Marcia), Kerry (Amanda) Strelieff, and Jill (Tom) Lawrence; great grandchildren: Mathieu and Claudie Sackney, Kluane Peabody, Mikhayla and Kaden Mann, Anais McCormick, Kiana, Brolen, Rylan, and Marshall Strelieff, Morgan, Nori, Valentino, Angelica Strelieff and Nathlisha; and her great-great granddaughter, Ariah Mann; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
