Nigel Fortlage
Peacefully on Saturday, February 10, 2018, Nigel passed away at Grace Hospital.
Nigel will be lovingly remembered by his wife Cathie; his children Karen (Bob), Cynthia, Julia (Paul); grandchildren Samantha, Stephanie, Graeme, and Gillian; daughter-in-law Kathy; his brother Tim (Liz) from England; as well as sister-in-law Moira (Thor), Thor and Meghann; and his faithful furry friend Robbie.
He was predeceased by his parents and his first wife Iris.
Nigel was born in April 1939 in Guilford, Surrey, England, but was immediately relocated to a farm in Britton, Somerset at the start of WWII. After his early education, Nigel began an apprenticeship as a chef at the Dorchester Hotel in London in 1956. In 1963, he moved to Northern Ireland, where he ultimately learned his autobody skills at Downshire Ford. In 1972, he immigrated to Canada and settled in Winnipeg. He began his career in autobody repair with Gateway Chev. Olds in 1972. In 1984, he moved to body repair with Winnipeg Transit, where he remained until he retired as Charge Hand in 2006.
Throughout his life, Nigel had an interest in all sports and cars. He participated in a variety of sports, in fact his credo was “If you have not tried it, you can’t talk about it.” He particularly looked forward to his annual fishing trip at Crow Duck Lake with the boys from Winnipeg Transit. He was a member of the M.C.A.A.C., and enjoyed driving to the Half Moon where he would park his “work in progress” 59 MGA with other club cars. To his vintage car owner friends he would say “It’s a driver, not a show car.”
Nigel loved his family and he loved life. We shall miss his sense of humor, and his gregarious spirit.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nursing staff at Grace Hospital ICU for their care and support.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street, West St. Paul, MB.
