Nellie Dennis
March 19, 1923 – January 26, 2018
Nellie Dennis, beloved wife of the late Ted Dennis, passed away in Stettler, AB, on January 26, 2018, at the age of 94 years. Nellie was born in Edson, AB, to Elias and Polly Germaniuk. As a young girl, she lived in many towns between Edson and Edmonton, as her father worked for the CNR. When she was seven years of age, her family moved to Stony Plain, AB, where Nellie completed her schooling. While in high school, she excelled in basketball. This was quite an accomplishment for someone of her stature. She considered joining the world-famous Edmonton Grads, but the start of the war had her change her plans. After graduation, she moved to Edmonton and worked at the GWG plant while taking night classes at Alberta College.
After a season of picking fruit in the Okanagan Valley with her sister, Anne, she moved to Vancouver to work at the Boeing Air Factory. While in Vancouver, she met her future husband, Ted Dennis. Following a courtship in Vancouver, Nellie and Ted started their life together and were married on July 29, 1945 in Canora, SK. They were blessed with four children: Theresa, Phyl, Bea and Greg. Before the children arrived, Nellie obtained various jobs in Canora, working at the Creamery, Hatchery, Hospital, Swerhone’s Bakery, and the Town of Canora. Her best job, the one she loved the most, was being a Mom and eventually, Baba and Pra-Baba. Nellie and Ted were both active members of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity.
They built a cottage at Sunnyside/Burgis Beach and over the years, the family continued to thrive there. Nellie taught everyone how to fish and clean what they caught, how to garden, and how to pick mushrooms and saskatoons. Everyone enjoyed the Friday night Bingo games and the Saturday night dances. Nellie ensured her children and grandchildren had everlasting memories of the cabin and the lake.
Nellie will be remembered for her magnificent gardening skills, her love of dancing with Ted, the artistry of her Pysankas, hobbies that included needlepoint, embroidery, cross-stitching and crocheting, the smell of her cinnamon buns, and for always having a table full of food for her family and guests. Her quick wit and her loving nature will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Nellie was predeceased by her parents, Elias (1985) and Polly (2001); husband, Ted (2000); grandson, Elliott Deer (1977); and her brothers: Steve, Barney and Peter Germaniuk and sister, Anne
