Nellie (Anelia) Ratushniak
March 21, 1927 – January 2, 2018
Nellie Ratushniak, beloved wife of the late Joe Ratushniak of Canora, SK, passed away at the Canora Gateway Lodge on January 2, 2018, at the age of 90 years.
Nellie was born to Kazio and Anna (Kmet) Tytula on March 21, 1927, north of Stenen, SK. One year later, Nellie’s family moved to the Canora area. She received her education at Dunay Rural School and Canora High School prior to proceeding on to Normal School in Moose Jaw, SK, where she obtained her teacher training and certificate.
On August 7, 1948, Nellie was united in marriage to Joseph Ratushniak at Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, Canora, SK. They were blessed with their two sons, Irvin and Joseph.
For over twelve years, Nellie worked as a school teacher in three different one-room schools in the Canora District. Nellie and Joe continued to live on the homestead farm until a decline in Joseph’s health prompted their retirement and relocation to Canora in 1999. They were active members of Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church. They enjoyed travelling and Nellie fondly recalled a trip to Dobrovoda, north-western Ukraine, where she proudly had the opportunity to trace her roots and see the country her family came from. Nellie also enjoyed collecting glassware and reading. As once a cancer survivor, Nellie will be remembered for her strength and determination as she faced and overcame life’s challenges. She recently became a resident of the Canora Gateway Lodge, where she resided until her passing on January 2, 2018. She will be significantly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Nellie was predeceased by her parents, Kazio and Anna; husband, Joseph Ratushniak; and her brother, Mike and sister, Mary. She is survived by her sons: Irvin (Liz) and Joseph (Julia); and her three grandchildren: Jessica, Adrienne and Thomas; sister, Pauline; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family.
A Prayer Service will be held on Wednesday, January 10, 2018, at 7:00 pm and Funeral Service celebrated on Thursday, January 11, 2018, at 10:00 am, both from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, with Very Rev. Fr. Joakim Rac, as Celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow in the Canora Cemetery. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Nellie Ratushniak.
