OBITUARY
Monica Eileen Mary Mulcahy Connors, age 68, passed away peacefully on September 4th, 2018,
surrounded by her loving family. The world has lost one of its angels. She was the master of caring. She loved deeply. Her smile was magical. Her touch was powerful. She decorated the lives of everyone around her with joy, generosity and compassion. She showed us all how to live – in the most gentle and kind of way. “Monie” was born in Halifax on April 25, 1950 to James Francis and Dorothy Rita (Lynch) Mulcahy. She grew up in an Irish-Catholic home, which was rich with love, laughter, and compassion. She enjoyed her days as a child in Halifax with some of her best friends – her siblings – Kathleen (Tom), Sharon (Marcel), Jimmy (Sarah), and Sheleagh (Steve). On December 2nd, 1972, she married the love of her life, Kevin. Together they created a life of love on Aspen Crescent in Lower Sackville. It was here that they raised – “The Three Boys” – Ryan (Lori), Timmy (Jodie), and Liam (Amanda) in a house rooted in love, laughter, compassion and tradition. Monica’s passion for life, fervour for foolishness, genuine devotion to those in need, and constant
generosity was contagious for all those who kept company with her. In the early years in Lower Sackville, Monica devoted her time to her boys by staying at home to ensure they stayed out of trouble. During those days Monica enjoyed her time as a Beaver Leader, spring fling volunteer, and hockey chauffeur. Once the boys moved out, Monica made the decision to return to the workforce as an Educational Program Assistant. The bulk of her EPA career was spent at Sycamore Lane Elementary. It was here that Monica shared one of her greatest characteristics – her compassion and empathy for the individual spirit of the students in her care. She retired from her position in June 2017. Monica loved sitting around the pond with her glass of white wine, walks around First Lake with her “grand-dog” Alee and dressing up in the weirdest costumes, stickers, earrings, and flags she could find for any party she was attending. She was most happy when the parties were with her family and many close friends. Beyond home, her favorite spot in the world was walking the sandy beaches on Anna Maria Island while on one of her many vacations to Florida to visit her sister. Without question, Monica’s joy was greatest in her role as “Nana” for her six wonderful and loving grandchildren – Hannah, Ava, Aden, Emmett, Addison, and Lauren. Whether it was dressing up in her father’s Santa Claus suit to perform “The Night Before Christmas” or jumping in the pool or bathtub with them fully dressed, Nana’s love for her grandchildren was steadfast and unwavering. Her spirit lives on in each of them. Monica is predeceased by her father James, her mother Dorothy, her father-in-law Patrick Connors, and her beloved sister-in-law Sarah Mulcahy. She will be sorely missed by her husband, three sons, three daughters-in-law, six grandchildren, her siblings and their spouses, her mother-in-law Marie Connors, her in-laws, cousins, all her nieces and nephews, and all those who were lucky enough to know her.The family extends our sincere gratitude to all the doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals who have been involved in Monica’s care over the last ten months. Most significantly, our heartfelt thanks to the entire “team” on the 7.4 Neurology ward at the QEII Health Science Centre. We will forever be grateful for the the authentic love, expertise, and professionalism that we saw over the last 40 days – yours is “a story about care”. Funeral services will be held at 11am on Saturday, September 8th at St. John Vianney Catholic Church (4 Beaverbank Rd, Lower Sackville). Bright colored clothing encouraged. A Celebration of Life will take place immediately after the mass in the church hall below. Internment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Monica’s name to the Canadian Association of Williams Syndrome: www.williamssyndrome.ca
