Matthew Jesse Bisschop
Feb. 14, 1998 – Mar. 30, 2018
On March 30th 2018, my son, Matthew Jesse Bisschop died at Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Center. After having struggled with depression for eleven years, he took his own life. Matthew had registered to be an organ donor, and because of his generous choice, four people have been given the chance to enjoy a longer life.
Matt was born in Kenora on Feb. 14, 1998. His first favourite colour was gold, his first word was ball, and he was born with a cute birth mark on his left knee. He didn’t talk until he was almost 2 but was walking by the time he was 1. He slept so much as a baby that I used to go into his room with a mirror to make sure he was still breathing.
Matt was skating by the age of 3 and soon developed a love of hockey, becoming a talented goalie. He played guitar and enjoyed music. He analysed the elements of a song, the bass, the vocals, the drums, the meaning of the lyrics. His taste was eclectic, from Beethoven to Token, from Ed Sheeran to Third Day, and any « worthy » song in between.
He went to Montessori, was homeschooled for 3 years, Christian education, then Lakewood and TA. He was so smart. He questioned everything and had opinions about everything. Matt believed in Jesus Christ, God and the Holy Spirit. He received Jesus Christ as his personal Savior one year at Red Rock Bible Camp and rededicated himself a couple years ago.
He worked at several Kenora businesses including my sister’s pet store, where he found his true niche. His passion for animals was undeniable. Matt had a talent for creating well-designed, natural habitats for all types of creatures, from fish and reptiles to ferrets. Matt researched everything and excelled at customer service. Everyone loved the time and attention that he spent making sure their questions were answered and their needs met. Veronica and Darien were very sad when Matt decided to move on to a different job this January.
Matt’s life touched many others and he will be dearly missed. All are welcome to attend his Celebration of Life service, being held on April 14, 2018 at 1pm – 3pm in the Rosewood Room of the Clarion Hotel, Kenora.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Matt’s memory may be made to gofundme-matthewbisschop (proceeds will be donated to the Vancouver Aquarium).
