OBITUARY
Mary Leona Irene Pepin
September 17, 1926 – December 18, 2018
In recognition of a life well lived, the family of Mary Leona Irene Pepin, known as Leona (or Nanny, to her grandchildren), announces her passing on Tuesday, December 18, 2018, at the age of 92 years.
Leona was born in Port Arthur, Ontario, on September 17, 1926. She married Emile Pepin on October 29, 1947 and, in 1958, the family moved to Nelson, BC for his work at the Canadian Pacific Railway. She moved to Calgary in 2003 to be closer to her family.
Leona was a strong and outgoing person who enjoyed being with people, both friends and strangers alike. Over the years, she volunteered with many organizations, including the Catholic Women’s League, TOPS, the Hospital Auxiliary, the Grand-Friend school program, and the Nelson Italian Canadian Society. She enjoyed organizing social events and her hand-written calendars made her mark on each place she lived. She was renowned for her baking skills; her fudge was legendary (a family secret passed down to her granddaughters) and was a welcome and profitable addition to any bake sale.
Leona was endlessly proud of her children and grandchildren and loved to share all of their successes…and, hopefully, bested everyone else’s stories. She had a fabulous sense of fashion and flair for style. One of her favourite pastimes was shopping for clothes, accessories, and home décor. She also loved a good game of cards, especially cribbage, rummy, or bridge.
Leona was a devout Catholic whose faith upheld her throughout life’s many ups and downs. She used her “direct line” to Heaven (via her prayers) to intercede on behalf of her loved ones. One of her favourite reminders was “Let Go, Let God.” Her family takes comfort in knowing that she is now at peace in the tender embrace of the Lord.
Leona will be lovingly remembered by her brother and sister-in-law, Sonny and Marlene Del Pino; her children, Pamela Pepin, Noel Pepin, and Andre and Valerie Pepin; her grandchildren Erin and Paul Werbicki, Renee Wassick, Janelle and Andrew Borne, Noelle Pepin, Jesse Pepin, and Nicole Pepin; and her great-grandchildren, Emil, Betty, and Jeremiah. Leona was predeceased by her parents, Leona and Gelindo Del Pino, beloved husband, Emile, her sisters, Valerie and Rita, her infant daughter Paula, and her former son-in-law David Wassick. Leona will also be fondly remembered by her nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
A Funeral Liturgy will be held in the New Year.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations being made in Leona’s memory directly to the Mustard Seed, (102 11 Ave SE, Calgary, AB T2G 0X5) or online at theseed.ca.
