Mary Koncohrada died peacefully on Sunday, December 2, 2018 at the age of 92 years, in Calgary. Mary was born and grew up on her family’s farm near Hodgeville, Saskatchewan during the Great Depression. An intelligent and determined individual, she was 16 when she left home to put herself through high school by working at Hobart’s farm near Clyde, Alberta. Mary attended the University of Alberta to obtain a teaching certificate and met her future husband Ray in 1948 on her first teaching assignment at the one room Chain school near Fawcett. In 1951 she married Ray, a recently graduated Chemical Engineer. Mary and Ray’s family grew as they moved between Glendive, Montana, Edmonton and Regina, finally settling in Calgary in 1964, where for several years Mary taught Calgary public school students who were confined to home for medical reasons. For 46 years, Mary and Ray loved their University Heights home and garden. Mary was an excellent cook, seamstress and gardener, but most enjoyed the company of friends and family. She will be greatly missed. She was predeceased by Ray, her loving husband of 61 years, and her brothers Tony and Joe Kaliciak. She is survived by her sisters, Anne Strauch and Rosemarie Hedley (Fen), and her daughters, Katherine (John), Barbara (Kelly) and Karen. A Memorial Service for Mary will be held in Spring 2019. Photos, memories and condolences may be shared with Mary’s family through www.evanjstrong.com. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Carewest Colonel Belcher for all their kindness and wonderful care of Mary since May 2012. Arrangements in care of EVAN J. STRONG FUNERAL SERVICES.
