Mary Agnes Grant
1929-2018
Mary Agnes Grant, 88, of James River, passed away peacefully
on Sunday, August 26, 2018 at the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home with
family by her side.
She was born October 28, 1929 in Antigonish where she was
raised by her grandparents the late Angus and Agnes MacMillan from
Hawthorne Street.
Mary attended school at Mount St. Bernard where she
demonstrated a talent for the craft of pottery. As a young
woman, she worked at Leo’s Corner Store in Antigonish. Mary
first met the love of her life, Harold Grant from James River, when
they were just babies. But as destiny would have it, decades later
they would meet again and fall in love. After a short period of
courtship, they married November 21, 1955 and settled in James River
in a home he built for her, where they raised their five
children.
Mary devoted her life to being a loving wife and
mother. She instilled in their children strong faith,
morals, and values. Mary cherished the time she spent
rocking and singing to her children and grandchildren in her wooden
rocking chair. She enjoyed baking for her family her one-of-a-kind
cinnamon rolls, biscuits, and marble cakes. Family
favourites were her ground-beef casserole and Christmas potato
dressing, each made from her own special recipe and magic
touch.
She loved to play pranks and felt very accomplished when she
was successful. Mary was always open to lending a helping hand and in
earlier years and was an active volunteer for the St.
Joseph’s CWL working at Church picnics. Later in
life, Mary looked forward to her Bingo nights with her Harold and
their Bingo friends. Mary was never afraid of hard work and looked
forward to assisting Harold with his annual harvest of their Christmas
trees.
For several years prior to her Harold’s passing,
Mary was committed to providing him with the nurturing and care he
needed to remain in his home. Mary loved and took much pride
in her James River home. She lived there for several years
after Harold’s passing until her health no longer allowed
her to stay.
Mary’s greatest accomplishment is the legacy of
love she left behind. She is survived by four children
Hector (Debbie), Cloverville; Heather MacDonald, Calgary, AB;
Leslie (Janet) Grant, Charlottetown, PEI; Margie
(Billy) Gillis, Fort McMurray, AB; and 17 grandchildren: Craig,
Tristan, and Brendan Grant; Mary Patricia (Aaron) Lambert, Russell P.
(Jodie) MacDonald, Stephanie (Shane) Selinger, Erin (Aaron) Atkinson,
Maranda (Alex) Key, Maggie Grant (Nick), Michael (Jenn)
Bennett, Christopher Bennett, Courtney (Cory) MacSween, Kylie and
Johnathan Gillis, Ryan Baker, Sara and Devin Hartman, and 17
great-grandchildren.
Mary is predeceased by her beloved husband of 54 years
Harold; daughter, Helen Grant-Baker; grandparents, Angus and Agnes
MacMillan; parents In-law, Leslie and Margaret Grant, as well as close
aunts and uncles.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 2, 2018 from

Street, Antigonish. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on
