Marjorie Eva Reith passed away peacefully in her 96th year at Wyndham Manor nursing home in Oakville, where she had lived since 2014. Though her children are saddened at the loss of their mother, they are happy with the thought that she is reunited with her husband Alan, and her siblings Hugh, Jeannie (Walker) and Tommy.
She is lovingly remembered by her children Craig (Terri) of Toronto and Muskoka, Janet (Sol) of Oakville, Ian of Whistler, B.C. and Douglas (Vanessa) of London (England), and her eight grandchildren, Erin, Michelle, Diana, Ben, Austin, Owen, William and Aidan.
Marjorie was born in Montebello, Quebec, with happy childhood memories of the village, the lumber tracts and sawmill her father (Stoney) owned and the Seigneury Club (now the Fairmont Chateau Montebello) where she played while her father later worked as Club Secretary. Her parents then moved the children to Montreal to further their education. After following in her mother’s footsteps and graduating from McGill University, she spent a short career with Bell Telephone. She met her husband Alan Reith in Montreal, where they married in 1952. They later moved to Oakville, Ontario for a few years before settling in Toronto, where Mom took on the job of raising their four children.
But that workload didn’t stop Mom from spending many hours volunteering with various organizations. She helped out with Meals on Wheels, was a Pink Ladies hospital volunteer, was part of one of the first groups that introduced « Out of the Cold », volunteered in many capacities at All Saints Anglican Church in Etobicoke, counselled distressed callers to 100 Huntley Street, and even until her 90th year volunteered at Kerr Street Mission. In fact, she was frustrated when her age and health prevented her from spending more time with the people she came to know and love at Kerr Street Mission. But age and health still didn’t stop her: when she moved into her retirement and nursing homes at Churchill Place then Wyndham Manor, she kickstarted and helped organize Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving services at both locations.
Mom was a wonderful mother, instilling in each of her children and grandchildren, in her own quiet way, much goodness and the need to show empathy and respect for others. Please honour her memory by doing even one small thing for a stranger every day of your lives.
A tremendous thank you to Mom’s caregivers at Churchill Place and Wyndham Manor. You should all be very proud of yourselves for the compassion, patience and professionalism you showed towards our mother and all the other residents every single day.
Go in peace Mom, we will cherish our memories of you and continue to love you. Thank you for being such a great mother!!
A funeral service and celebration of a life well lived will be held for Mom on Monday, April 2 at Chartwell Baptist Church, 228 Chartwell Road, Oakville, Ontario, with visitation starting at 11 am followed by a funeral service at noon.
Your gift of flowers, although appreciated, are not necessary. However, if you wish, donations in lieu of flowers can be made in our Mother’s memory to either Parkinson Canada or Kerr Street Mission.
