Marianne Begalke (nee Fuchs), of Steinbach, Manitoba, passed away Friday, December 29, 2017 at the Bethesda Hospital at the age of 80 years.
Her memory will be forever cherished by her children Karen (Richard), Gary (Bonnie), Janet (Richard), Emily (Jaki); grandchildren Ethan, Clinton (Rebecca); step-grandchildren Chynna, Madison, Cassandra (Tyler), Kylie (Chez), Jaden, Arissa; great-grandchildren Mikayla, Lucas, John, Cole; step great-grandchildren Ross and Jasper. Also left to mourn her are sisters Minnie, Viola, Helen (Jake), sisters-in- law Evelyn, Marge, Agatha, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mom was predeceased by her parents Emil and Annie Fuchs, husband Walter in 1999, grandson Eric in 2014, brothers Abe, Leonard, Carl and Waldo, brothers-in-law Steve and Dick.
Mom was born January 19, 1937 in Lowe Farm, Manitoba. Her family moved to a farm south of Grunthal when she was a young teenager. At the time public education ended after the eighth grade but Mom chose to pursue and complete her grade nine by correspondence. She spent her early years working in the dietary department at the King George Hospital in Winnipeg.
Mom was received into the Evangelical Lutheran Church by the sacrament of baptism on August 28, 1955. She married our Dad, Walter Begalke on
September 3, 1955 and they made their home in the Grunthal area. In 1962 they moved into a new home in town which was built by our Dad. It was here that we were lovingly raised.
Anyone that knew Mom knows how sweet and loving she was. She had the most beautiful smile, a prominent sense of humour and she loved to dance and sing. She lived out a quiet strong faith in Jesus Christ, praying daily for her family. She was also a very hard worker all of her life, enjoying her time gardening, canning and sewing our clothing when we were young. Outside of the home she worked as a Fuller Brush salesperson and later, at the Grunthal Menno Home, where she worked as their bookkeeper for fifteen years until her retirement.
Mom and Dad found great pleasure in camping, going on road trips and weekends away. In 1995 they moved to Steinbach where Mom continued to be a devoted caregiver to our Dad as his on-going health issues persisted. In 1996 Mom was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor. After undergoing six hours of surgery, the tumour was successfully removed and Mom suffered no ill effects. This was something she was always grateful for.
The loss of our Dad in 1999 left Mom feeling lost for the next couple of years yet she always remained positive and kept busy with working in her flower beds, cooking delicious meals and baking. She revelled in getting away on holidays with her children and would talk endlessly about her fun times later on while looking at her photo albums.
A few years ago Mom began to have trouble with her speech, in finding words. She would say she could see the word but it would not come out. She was now experiencing the effects from the growth of scar tissue on her brain, the result of her prior surgery. March 2016 she moved from her home to Cedarwood Supportive Housing and one year later to Rest Haven Nursing Home where she recently suffered a fall.
The following is a poem she wrote a few years ago after she realized her health was declining:
Time – Where did it go? When did it stop?
Was it this morning when I woke up?
Time – Just around noon when I had my lunch.
It slipped away I have a hunch.
Time – Where had it gone as I slipped off to dreamland,
could it be back tomorrow as time is timeless to the end?
The funeral service for Marianne Begalke will be held Saturday, January 6, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Steinbach, Manitoba with viewing prior to the service.
Interment to follow at the St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Friedensfeld, Manitoba.
The family would like to extend our gratitude to Pastor Terry and Rev. Melissa and to the nurses at the Bethesda Hospital who cared for her in her final days.
Thank you also to those who provided Mom with comfort and care, in a loving and dignified manner, these past few years.
If desired, donations may be made in Marianne’s memory to the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 465 Henry Street, Steinbach, Manitoba, R5G 0H1.
