Margery Jean Creighton Sewell 2018

Obituary Overview
Margery « Jean » Creighton Sewell
SEWELL (Black), Margery “JEAN” Creighton. – 97, Dartmouth, passed away peacefully at Parkland at the lakes with her family present on June 13, 2018. She was born in Abercrombie, on March 3, 1921.
At approximately age 3, her family moved to the Halifax area where she spent the rest of her life. Jean spent her summers at Hillcrest Farm, on Magazine Hill where she had a lot of fun playing with her cousins. After finishing high school, she attended commercial classes at the Halifax Academy and later worked at the Bank of Montreal as a teller until she retired in July 1943 to be a homemaker. Jean kept up this detailed record keeping practice until her sight prevented it.
She was a very gentle, loving, caring, thoughtful, resilient, patient, compassionate, fun-loving and devoted person. She was loved and respected by all; a role model for everyone. Jean and Roy cared for her parents at home for over 20 years. She was a wonderful wife, mum, grammy, aunt, friend and neighbor. She will be remembered by many for her playfulness, singing and many “special comical sayings” which kept everyone laughing. Her grandchildren have many wonderful memories of the visits with Grammy and Paba.
She was a member of the Co-vettes, bridge group, United Church Women, the Metro Merry-Makers Club, FunTime Rounds, other dancing groups, and the CNIB Dartmouth Support Group. She was always taking cookies to Hope Cottage and helping with the breakfast school program and Dartmouth North Food Bank. She collected for charities for many years.
She met the “love of her Life” Roy, at a wartime dance at the Jubilee Boat Club. They were together for almost 65 years. At age 65, Jean finally convinced Roy to go out dancing again. They joined square and round dance clubs, which they thoroughly enjoyed many times a week for 21 years, especially the socializing and desserts. In fact Mum’s nickname was “dessert’. She also enjoyed gardening, swimming, watching hockey, baseball, figure skating, Olympics, reading, travelling, golfing, camping, playing cards, especially a game called ten penny. Mum loved to exercise, continuing well into her 90’s by attending classes at the Dartmouth Seniors Centre. She was proud to be able to walk the Eastern Passage boardwalk in 20 minutes, with her walker, at age 95.
After almost a century on earth, living life to the fullest, she is now at peace with a clear mind, seeing well and dancing in Heaven with the “love of her life’.
She is survived by her daughter Jan (Bill) Weisenburger, Pine Lake, AB;: son Ron (Anne), Ottawa, ON; son-in-law Marvin (Caroline) Butlin, Calgary AB; grand-children, Keri (Graeme) Bruce, Jeff Butlin, Robert (Katrena) Sewell, David Sewell, Chris Weisenburger and Cory (Jo Lynn Teh) Weisenburger; great-grandchildren, Kristina, Ethan, Leigh; nieces Valerie, Elizabeth, Heather, Bonnie; and nephews John and Bill.
She was predeceased by her husband, Roy; her daughter Marilyn Butlin; brother Laurie Black, sisters-in-law Marguerite Black and Norma Stoneman; brother-in-law Gordon Stoneman.
A Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 18, 2018 at Stairs Memorial United Church, 44 Hester St., Dartmouth followed by a reception in the hall. Private interment to take place in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the CNIB, to Stairs Memorial United Church or to a charity of your choice.
We wish to give a special thanks to everyone who has provided loving care to Jean over the past number of years.
