Lawrie, Margaret (Peggy) nee Weir
October 29, 1918 – March 25, 2018
Peggy Lawrie, nee Weir, beloved wife of the late Harold “Hi” Lawrie (2002), passed peacefully at Markhaven in her 100th year. Dear mother to Janet Whiteley (Vic), Don Lawrie (Pat), Marg Bell (Ed), Chris Trought (Rob). Will be remembered dearly by grandchildren, Jennifer, Jacqui, Joanne (Darrin), Deanna, Sandra, Peter (Sarah), Sara, Alex, Craig and great grandchildren, Shepherd, Jaxon, Madeline, Aria and Mitchell. Peggy, daughter of Jim and Nellie (Hall) Weir grew up on a Scarborough farm with older brothers, Neil, Jack, Blake and Ches Weir, all deceased, and younger sisters, Nancy McCowan and Ruth Pike. During the hardship of the Depression years, Peggy developed a strong, competitive nature along with excellent work ethics. She cared for her family in the home she and “Hi” built on the Lawrie farm on Hwy #7 after he returned from overseas following WW 2, and helped to run the feed and grain business, Lawrie Bros. on Hwy #7. Peggy found time to volunteer at church, canvas for charities, host large family and neighbourhood events, play bridge and do crosswords. Curling at Unionville and golfing at Whitevale provided new grounds for her competitive spirit. Peggy Lawrie was a champion in both sports! The family extends thanks to the staff at Markhaven for excellent care the past 10 years. Visitation will take place at Dixon-Garland Funeral Home 166 Main St. N, (Markham Rd.) Markham on Wednesday March 28 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm with the service in the chapel on Thursday at 11 am. Interment St. Andrews Cemetery. If desired, donations may be made to Markhaven Foundation.
